Virgin Atlantic B747 Upper Deck

Fri Jan 27, 2012 4:25 pm

Hello,

I noticed on the Virgin Atlantic website that on some B747s they have economy class seating on the upper deck. I was just wondering if there are specific routes that these aircraft fly on and if they are published anywhere? Also do these seats usually get booked up quite quickly? I was planning on flying to New York in the summer and if I could get an economy seat on the upper deck it would be something I would want to book.

Thanks

They operate on routes from LHR-JFK/SFO/MIA/EWR/LAX and currently JNB. One of them also does LGW-BGI.

They are quite popular, and the routes do vary with the seasons. The best place to check in on the virgin Atlantic website.
So long 701, it was nice knowing you.

The 'LHR Config' aircraft also comes equipped with VPort (AVOD IFE)

NYC routes that see regular B744 services

VS045 LHR-JFK & VS046 JFK-LHR
VS001 LHR-EWR & VS002 EWR-LHR

VS003 & VS009 to JFK and VS017 to EWR are normally A340 routes

The Y upper deck seats are row's 75-80 (33 seats in total)

Enjoy.

I had a window seat up there on a flight from LHR to BOS with an empty seat next to me. In total there've been 6 empty seats.

How hard/much is pre-selection for these particular seats? Are they Y or Y+?

Don't do it ! I flew SFO-LHR on the upper deck on Christmas eve and found the leg room to be extremely cramped.
The only empty seats were the ones at the front and cabin crew said they were off limits unless you paid them $150 first.

You can normally reserve VS seats from the moment you book you're flight. As said, its the LHR flights that have this configuration. LGW is all premium economy on the upper deck.

At the moment the 747's are usually found on the JFK (VS045/46), JNB and SFO routes. The rest are A340's. The BGI flights seem to have reverted back to the LGW fleet in the last couple of weeks.

Thank you for the responses.

I thought that they may be on routes out of LHR to the likes of JFK as I saw that they had a lot of Upper Class seats and thoughts where else could they send them and still fill all the upper class seats. I may consider doing this for the novelty of being on the upper deck of the B747. However is the legroom on the upper deck economy seats any different from the lower deck. I would have thought that it would all have to be uniform across all economy sections?

Regards
