Cheap Around The World Air Fares

Wed Feb 01, 2012 5:30 pm

I just heard something yesterday that blows my mind if it turns out it's true;

My grandson is in the U.K. for a year on some kind of student thing.........got a ridiculously low student fare going over, from CVG to London, a non-stop flight as far as I know.

He will be leaving the U.K. in September to come home; here's the "crazy part"..........he has told his Mom that he has found out that when he comes home, he can fly EAST, going all the way around the world, with stops in a whole bunch of places, then all the way back to CVG for the same, or possible even slightly less than the fare going direct on the way to the U.K. in the first place.

His main reason for wanting to do this is simply to "see" more of the world, rather than as an "economy" measure.

I don't know a thing about international air fares, but I'm sure many on A.net do; I would like to hear what anyone possessing knowledge of this has to say on the matter, any suggestions as to carriers, etc. ( Thanks in advance )

It is usually not quite that cheap, but the RTW (round the world) tickets are reasonably priced.

You can go to either staralliance.com or oneworld.com and use their online booking tool to price them out yourself.

CVG-LHR no longer operates non-stop.

There's also the Great Escapade ticket which is a cheap option.

It's also rather limited in terms of destinations when compared to the alliance options. Air New Zealand also do a cheap RTW from about 800GBP.

I recommend the RTW routing on oneworld. He should sign up for an AA Advantage account and accrue miles for the trip. The NZ RTW involves London, Hong Kong, Auckland and Los Angeles but he'll have to buy separate tickets to ultimately get to CVG. The oneWorld pass will get him all the way to CVG depending on how he routes out of London headed east. He can "route" or "map" his routing on the oneworld website and needs to consider where his stopover/overnight cities will be. A continous journey with no stop or break in flying will be brutal.
You or he could consider SkyTeam as well (for consideration of DL in CVG) but I've found the routings on SkyTeam can be cumbersome and difficult with routings through China or via Chinese airlines who may or may not have good schedules and availability.
There is a "Round-the-World" Desk at DL that can assist you and the International Reservations Dept at AA can provide valuable information and assistance to you as well to get him headed in the right direction. In addition, the UK has a vast and knowledgable group of travel agencies that would be delighted to help him route and price the trip instead of trying to sort all this out on a website. Specific travel dates are a must to get an accurate routing and price.
Good Luck with this exciting opportunity to fly around the world......even if sleeping on overnight flights and suffering from jetlag!
watch what you want. you may get it.
