United/Continental Checked Baggage Question

Sun Feb 12, 2012 1:09 am

Hey guys, I have a complicated question (well sort of)

We're flying on SQ from JFK-MNL via FRA and SIN roundtrip but I would like to change the outbound from IAH-MNL via DME for the sake of going to Russia and trying out SQ's 77W so I could compare it with the A388.

However, the flights from NYC to IAH is very expensive, CO/UA is asking for $800 one way! While US is asking $250 via CLT. We have to go through IAH and not HOU.

BUT, when I was searching on Kayak.com, I came up with this fare: $137 on CO LGA-IAH-SAT which is incredibly cheaper than the rest, the problem is that we're going to have checked-in luggage. Is it possible to ask the agents at LGA if they could just tag our baggage just for IAH and not all the way to SAT? Or is it prohibited? Also, is it possible if UA will automatically connect our baggage to our SQ flight at IAH?

Thanks!

It's a cultural thing.

Well, IAH-NYC is a business market... it's sort of "normal" to have those sort of prices (especially CO). Why not use US or buy r/t tickets (if they're cheaper) and throw away the return?

That won't happen; never heard of that working... or maybe they'll charge you the fare to IAH when you ask. I really wouldn't count on it.

No - Will never happen. Agents and computer systems are well aware of passengers trying to take advantage of hidden city fares. I believe the only way to pull it off without consequences would be to fly one way w/o checked baggage and probably without a frequent flyer number attached to the reservation!

Given enough time in IAH I would imagine interlining UA-SQ would be possible, but I would talk to a reservations agent in advance to avoid nasty surprises upon checking in. How much time between flights at Houston in this itinerary?

You'll never make that work unless you somehow manage to not check the bags, and even then I would not put my FF number on the ticket.
