I am flying to CPT in about a month and a half. I have already booked the MEX-ATL-JNB-ATL-MEX flight and need to book a separate JNB-CPT flight so as to get to CPT. How much time do I need to allow for the connection? I understand I will have to disembark, go through immigration, retrieve my luggage, go through customs, and then walk to the domestic terminal in order to catch my flight. If it is helpful, my arrival at JNB is at 17:25 local time.
Based on the search that I have conducted, I found the following:
SA has the following flights on March 31:
SA 0365 18:40 It might be cutting it too short and it is fully booked anyway.
SA 0367 19:30
SA 0377 20:45
SA 0375 21:00
It is noteworthy that the later the flight, the cheaper the fare.
JE (Mango) has on March 31:
JE 0149 18:50
Kulula, BA (Comair) and 1Time have nothing later than 18:00 on March 31, so they have all been ruled out.
I know that flying on separate tickets is always risky because the consequences of a cancellation or long delay would be terrible, but we are flying like this because my friend is flying on a reward DL ticket. Plus, what is done is done! LOL.
Anyway, assuming all goes well and our ATL-JNB does not get cancelled or delayed, should we book the Mango flight at 18:50, or should we choose something later with SA? Your feedback is appreciated.
By the same token, if someone could please summarize the immigration, baggage claim and customs process, that would be really lovely.
Thanks so much!!!
