AA Checked Bag Question

Thu Feb 23, 2012 4:41 am

My wife and I are flying DEN - LIH via LAX next week on AA. Our DEN - LAX flight is Tuesday evening and our LAX - LIH is Wednesday morning. We are staying overnight at the Raddison to avoid what would have been a tight 40 minute connection. My question is, can we check our bag straight through to LIH on Tuesday night when we check-in at DEN? We hope to do this and avoid having to pay our baggage fee's twice. If we do have to retrieve our bags in LAX any chance AA would not charge us the next day?

We will have 1 carry on each that will serve as our overnight bag so we would prefer not having to retrieve our checked bags.

Thoughts?

I think you won't pay a bag fee the next day. If your schedule says that your final destination is LIH and your flight won't leave until the next day, unless you booked each segment separately, for all intents and purposes you have a layover of 8 hours (or whatever amount it is) so I think they'll hold on to your bags until your next flight. This is no different than when you miss a connection (because your airplane arrived late) and your bag is scanned for another flight.

I would, however, call the airline to be 100% certain that this is how it will be and once you return to LAX (if you didn't have to recheck your bag), make sure that the airline has it and it's ready to be sent out so that it makes it safe and sound to LIH.

I just spoke with a AA telephone CSA, she told me that AA considers anything over 4 hours a "stopover" and not a "layover" and that we will have to retrieve our bags and then repay baggage fees the next day. I hoped to avoid even retrieving our bags, as we would just pack a small carry-on for our overnight. These segments were not booked separately, like I mentioned above we asked AA for a schedule change to avoid a 40 minute connection in LAX on Wednesday morning. When I made the change they didn't mention that I would have to recheck and REPAY my baggage fees. So instead we will end up paying $100 just to get our bags to LIH    . Gonna try my luck with a AA CSA this evening at DEN at check-in. Any verbal judo suggestions for how to make this fair for both us and AA?

If they post the flight with that as a connection how can they consider it a layover? They show some Europe flights in excess of 30 hours as a flight option- they consider that a stop over even though involuntary and they promote the connection? Ie ord to lhr on a day flight arriving late evening to connect to a flight the following afternoon.
