Newbie Help With KVS And Fare Discrepancies

Thu Mar 01, 2012 5:29 pm

So I just recently discovered KVS and I've been playing with it for a while, but there's something I don't quite understand about fare codes. I'll make an example:

I'm trying to look at fares for a MXP-JFK flight with LX, onward 02 Jul 2012, return 13 Jul 2012.

Under "Fares", KVS returns the following for R/T at these dates:

LX MIL NYC 573 EUR THNCIAW
LX MIL NYC 643 EUR SHRCIAW
LX MIL NYC 673 EUR WHRCIAW
LX MIL NYC 803 EUR VHRCIAW
LX MIL NYC 963 EUR QHRCIAW

Under "Availability", it returns the following for the onward flight on 02 Jul...

LX/## 1639 MXP 07:10 ZRH 08:05 AR1 J9 C9 D9 Z8 P0 Y9 B9 M9 U9 H9 Q9 V9 W9 S9 T9 L0 K0 E0
-> LX 16 ZRH 09:50 JFK 12:35 333 F8 A8 J9 C9 D9 Z8 P0 Y9 B9 M9 U9 H9 Q9 V9 W9 S9 T9 L0 K0 E0

... and for the return flight on 13 Jul:

LX 15 JFK 20:55 ZRH 10:45 333 F8 A8 J9 C9 D9 Z9 P0 Y9 B9 M9 U9 H9 Q9 V9 W9 S9 T9 L9 K9 E0
-> LX/## 1628 ZRH 12:25 MXP 13:20 AR1 J9 C9 D9 Z9 P0 Y9 B9 M9 U9 H9 Q9 V9 W9 S9 T9 L9 K9 E0

If I understand this correctly, on all flights there 9 seats of the "T" fare available ("T9"), which should cost 573 EUR. But when trying to book this on swiss.com, the quoted fare for these flights is EUR 935.

What am I missing? I'm aware of the fact that the really interesting fares ("L" and "K") are not out yet (is it possible to guess when they will?), but still, I'm trying to figure how this works by making some examples, and it doesn't work as expected.

Your help is appreciated.

Hi ManuCH,

It depends on the fare rules within the fare basis. Right click on the fare basis and you can view the fare rules. All fare classes, in this case “T” are dependent on certain rules and you will be able to see if there are any minimum or maximum stay or other requirements for this specific fare basis.

I hope this helps.

Take care,

Thank you. Yes, that makes sense. I have looked at the fare restrictions. The only thing that could be the problem is this:

THE CARRIER SHALL LIMIT THE NUMBER OF PASSENGERS
CARRIED ON ANY ONE FLIGHT AT FARES GOVERNED BY
THIS RULE AND SUCH FARES WILL NOT NECESSARILY BE
AVAILABLE ON ALL FLIGHTS. THE NUMBER OF SEATS,
WHICH THE CARRIER SHALL MAKE AVAILABLE ON A GIVEN
FLIGHT, WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE CARRIERS BEST
JUDGEMENT.

But then again, if they restrict the number of passengers, shouldn't they zero it out and make it "T0"?

Usually yes, it doesn't make sense. However, the fare rules can sometimes be quite complicated for those of us that are not travel agents, working with it on a regular basis and not entirely familiar with different fare basis’. I will try to get more info from a friend in the industry.

What you're missing are the taxes and fees...

LX YQ surcharge (YQ) €264.00
USDA APHIS Fee (XA) €3.72
US Immigration Fee (XY) €5.21
US Customs Fee (YC) €4.09
Swiss Airport Passenger Security & Noise Charge (CH) €39.68
US International Arrival Tax (US) €12.42
Italian Embarkation Tax (IT) €7.75
Italian Security Charge (VT) €1.81
Italian Security Bag Charge (EX) €2.07
Italian Council City Tax (HB) €4.50
Italian Passenger Service Charge (MJ) €0.58
US International Departure Tax (US) €12.42
US September 11th Security Fee (AY) €1.86
US Passenger Facility Charge (XF) €3.35

The €935 you quoted is the T class fare.

Cofannyc, thank you very much for that info.

That was a rookie mistake form my side as well. So I hope that explains it Manu. The fares that you see are base fares excluding all taxes

Take care

Thank you Cofannyc, that explains it! I totally missed the taxes part - actually, I didn't think it turned out to be so much. That "YQ" tax is pretty interesting.

YQ isn't a tax, it's the fuel surcharge. I can't say that every carrier labels their fuel surcharge as YQ, but the vast majority does.
