I've never heard of this happening before, but I think that its a very classy move by Star Alliance.
If you had Gold or Silver status on the SpanairStar frequent flyer program, you can transfer that status to one of the following member carriers programs:
PhoenixMiles (Air China)
SAS EuroBonus (Scandinavian Airlines)
Mileage Plus (United Airlines)
Airpoints (Air New Zealand)
Royal Orchid Plus (Thai Airways Intl.)
Dividend Miles (US Airways)
Miles & Bonus (Aegean Airlines)
Aeroplan (Air Canada)
TAP Victoria (TAP Portugal)
If you choose Air New Zealand Airpoints, you will still have to pay the joining fee.
Your miles will not transfer. Only your status.
Have any of the other alliances allowed for this after the demise of one of it's members?
