Star Alliance Allows Status Match For Spanair FF's

Mon Mar 05, 2012 10:36 pm

I've never heard of this happening before, but I think that its a very classy move by Star Alliance.
If you had Gold or Silver status on the SpanairStar frequent flyer program, you can transfer that status to one of the following member carriers programs:

PhoenixMiles (Air China)
SAS EuroBonus (Scandinavian Airlines)
Mileage Plus (United Airlines)
Airpoints (Air New Zealand)
Royal Orchid Plus (Thai Airways Intl.)
Dividend Miles (US Airways)
Miles & Bonus (Aegean Airlines)
Aeroplan (Air Canada)
TAP Victoria (TAP Portugal)

If you choose Air New Zealand Airpoints, you will still have to pay the joining fee.
Your miles will not transfer. Only your status.

Have any of the other alliances allowed for this after the demise of one of it's members?

Great news for our poor JK members and a good PR move for Star Alliance.

Interesting to see that two key programs are not participating in this initiative:

(a) Lufthansa's Miles & More program, and Europe's biggest FFP. It is the FFP for the key Star Alliance member is Europe including LH, LX, OS, SN, and LO.

(b) Turkish Airlines' Miles & Smiles program.

This is a very good move since it should lessen the number of JK flyers exodusing en masse to IB. I would imagine that TP would pick up most.

Further, it simply makes Star "look nice" and is there a great PR stunt.

Now it would be good if OW could do the same for Malev (and IAG for JK )...

This is definitely not a good PR move. I wouldn't be surprised if no one joined Airpoints.

This was announced well over a week ago by Star Alliance. I pop into the Star Alliance Facebook page every day or two and some people seem to be enraged over the fact that they "only get status and not the miles". You would think it is great PR, but greedy people tend to be irrational thinkers.

I personally think this is a great move by Star Alliance. There is really nothing binding them to any sort of compensatory action like a status match. Very generous.

Not a big fan of this term, but rules are rules I guess...
