AA/UA And International Terminal 5 At ORD

Sat Mar 10, 2012 10:41 pm

Do American and United still service (re-fuel/clean/cater etc.) their international arrivals aircraft at Terminal 5 before being towed to their respective departure terminals? Or are they immediately towed to their own terminals after offloading the passengers? On average, how long are AA/UA aircraft on-stand at T5 for?

I would actually also be interested in the answer from someone that knows. But it would surprise me if they did service them at T5. It's pretty busy in the afternoon when the Europe flights arrive. It must be easier to tow an empty plane than a full plane. Plus, I think the pilot has input into that, and I'm not sure how that would happen if the pilot isn't there preflighting the plane and ordering his reserve fuel based on routing, weather, and stuff. Also, because ORD often has irregular operations, and the planes have different destinations (Asia, Europe, Mexico, South America), that it wouldn't make sense to cater and provision them much in advance because the equipment might get swapped out. My opinions notwithstanding, I actually have no idea.

Quoting ual1kflyer (Reply 1):

Even with the European afternoon influx I don't think the terminal is too near capacity. I would have thought that AA/UA use their time at T5 to prepare for departure from their home terminals so they wouldn't be parked at their "home" gates too long, thereby cutting down on precious time spent at their own gates.

But I very likely could be wrong! I'd also be interested to know what NH, LH, IB and JL do as these flights are also towed over to T1/T3 for departure after arriving at T5.
