UA Vs LH In J Class?

Mon Mar 19, 2012 8:14 pm

Hello - I did a search for current status of UA vs LH trans-atlantic service in J class but all of the threads that I found were too old to reply to. If I missed a more current one, I apologize. I fly UA (as successor to CO) quite a bit domestically, but haven't had need to fly to Europe in over 4 years. I am looking at flying in J class in September or October of this year, and am curious about the current level of quality of the service. I know the former CO 764's have been upgraded recently, but haven't been on one with the new lie flats yet. Opinions? I know most will likely say that LH is better, but I've never flown LH and really don't know what to expect. I'm tempted to fly them just to get the 744 from IAH for old times sake, or if I'm REALLY lucky the 748i, possibly from ORD. Is the UA 744 in J class comparable? As of now, the fares are all about the same regardless of hub or aircraft. It doesn't matter to me which hub I fly through on the way to Frankfurt.

Thoughts? Thanks much...

If you get the new UA IPTE product over the old angled-seat LH product, I would go with UA hands down as the seat means more to me than soft items like food and service delivery.

If you fly LH from IAH to FRA after June of this year, you will be on an A380. Don't know if that's better than the 744 or not, haven't flown one. Yes, UA is upgrading the J seats on the 764's, but so far only 3 of the 16 are done, and from what I've heard, it takes a couple weeks for them to do one aircraft, so not all will be done by this September.

LH won't start the A380 service until August to IAH...

I would choose the transatlantic flight which is longest, meaning you get more sleep. Therefore I would fly from IAH and either fly directly to FRA or to LHR on UA/CO as they have the 772ER on that route with the new product. After flying LH in Business recently I do not think you will miss out on the better food as the food was very average.

I may be biased,    , but in terms of OVERALL satisfaction, LH wins.

They may still have the angled seat, however it is quite comfortable, and roomy. You can adjust it to a cradle position that offers you a great sleeping seat.

And as far as the beverages and food go, LH has always shined IMO.

Let us no your verdict after the fact

Safe travels!!!!!

Thanks all, for the input. I think I've decided to wait and schedule and buy the tickets until later this summer when I can see what the equipment options are. I'd like to try the new UA/CO lieflats, and I love flying out of IAH to Europe. But... If I can work out getting on a 380 from IAH to Frankfurt and then possibly a 748i back to ORD, IAD or wherever, I'm not sure I can pass that up. The angled seats aren't that big a drawback to me, and I'd get to fly a new carrier and two new types for me for the first time.

Thanks again. I will update this thread later this summer when I get the ticket bought.
