Skipping Last Leg To Save Money - Consequences?

Sun Apr 08, 2012 3:03 pm

Hi there,

I'm looking at flying one-way from Dublin to Copenhagen on April 15, but the flight 10.15am costs around 550 USD direct to CPH. However, if I try to book DUB-HAM (via CPH on the same 10.15am flight) the fare is only 180 USD.

I'm wondering if there is any way to get around this:

1) Would I be able to just get off at CPH and would I be charged after in case I didn't get on the second leg to HAM?
2) I will be having checked-in luggage with me, but could I have it checked only part way to CPH?
3) In case they won't let me check my bag part way, the bag would of course get pulled from the aircraft at CPH before leaving to HAM. Wouldn't I just be able to pick it up later in CPH?

Hope to have some answers from you,

Regards,

the checked baggage is the problem, they will check it through to HAM and if you try to collect it after you stayed at CPH they might bill you for the difference.

Why not continue to HAM and try to get a one way fare HAM-CPH? Or take the train back, you might still end up savoing some money.

You can try to ask them to short tag it to CPH, and not tagged all the way through to HAM.

I doubt they will do it unless he has a very good reason.

Airlines know of hidden city tickets, and they do catch PAX doing this.

It will be indeed difficult to short tag the bag to CPH without a good reason. Especially if the layover is very short, you won't even have the time to pick it up in CPH and recheck it. It's also not a good idea to check it through to HAM and then just leave the airport at CPH, as you will delay a flight and cause inconvenience to a lot of passengers. Wouldn't be fair from you.

What you can do is to book the continuation of the CPH-HAM flight the next day and making sure that the stop in CPH will be less than 24 hours. Then it's counted as transit point and not a stopover. You would have a good reason to short tag your bags to CPH as you would need to spend a night there. Next day you just don't check in and therefore they will not wait for you before closing the gate.

But then, as posted in your other thread, it's probably cheaper to fly either the day before from NYC to CPH via WAW or the 14APR with Aeroflot via SVO. You will have one ticket, it will be less stressful, and probably cheaper. And you will be covered if you miss your connecting flights in case of delays.

Why not just carry it on? or is it too big for the overhead?

Purchase the ticket DUB-CPH-HAM, with an overnight in CPH. You are allowed up to a 24 hour connection, as it is international. This way there is no prob checking bag just to CPH.

If you book an overnight at CPH the ticket price is likely to go up.. About short tagging - I remember an on board courier which I sent FRA-BHX. To avoid an overnight at BHX the courier was routed straight back to DUS with rail connex to FRA. Full fare Y, the courier piece had to be checked in due to weight. The computer issued a baggage tag FRA/BHX/DUS. Totally insane.

It took me about 15 minutes to get a supervisor to override the computer and issue a tag FRA/BHX.

Usually a stop less than 24 hours is not counted as stopover, therefore price will only go up if the next day the flights within 24 hours are not available in the same booking classes, resulting in a higher overall fare. just try it out to see if the price indeeds raise because availability is bad.

How about just mailing your baggage to your destination in advance? In that case, you would then be able to deplane where you wanted to and your bag would be waiting for you. Could be cheaper than another ticket.
