Question About Surprise Upgrade Tomorrow On United

Fri Apr 13, 2012 4:17 am

I'm flying LAX-SBA-SFO-YVR tomorrow on United Express and United (the unusual routing is due to having to take the absolute last flight from LA). I used my dad's miles to book this trip, he is a Premier Platinum member. Just tonight I was checking in online and I noticed the flight from SFO-YVR was now in R class (branded as United Business). I'm not complaining in the slightest, but I am very curious as to why I was upgraded prior to check-in (and why I was never told so).

So . . . you'll only accept a last-minute upgrade if the airline asks your permission to do so ?

Possibly your dad (the person whose account you say you are flying on) *may* have received such a notice .

More likely, if the SFO-YVR aircraft is an OO CR7, then upgrades are probably still being considered.

It's actually an A320. More than likely he's got his Dad's status on the trip (whether he should or not) and they went through and did the standard upgrades 24 hours before departure (standard at UA) for certain elite levels.

Yes, UA allows a couple of things.
First, when you book using miles from a member account for any traveler they 'inherit' the status of the account member. The result of this is that the ticket will adhere to the upgrade process UA has for all elites. That means they will upgrade you like you an elite based on status (ie T24), etc
Second, now since the move to shares they allow upgrades on award travels. PMUA did not.

You were upgraded because the account holder has a Chase credit card with United. This allows reward tickets booked by that account holder (regardless of who they are for) to be eligible for upgrades.

You are likely the beneficiary of an Operational Upgrade.

If UA has overbooked the flight, it's possible they have open seats in First Class and are full-up in Economy. So UA will of their own accord upgrade passengers from Economy into First Class to free up seats in Economy to accommodate last-minute bookings on full fares. As your father is a Premier Platinum, he would be a likely candidate to be upgraded as airlines tend to upgrade their elite frequent flyer program members.

I've been Operationally Upgraded on UA on a number of occasions as a 1K and a UGS.

While theoretically possible, it is far more likely that the upgrade occurred due to the account holder being a Chase UA card holder as I stated above.

You can confirm this by looking at the flight status on http://mobile.united.com and seeing if you are listed as being upgraded there.

It doesn't really have anything to do with Chase. It's that they are a Mileage Plus premier status customer as stated by ORDBOSEWR. While many (most?) MP members have the Chase MP Cards, it's not a requirement to be in the program.

As Complimentary Premier Upgrades for Chase cardholders on award tickets are processed last, that would make sense that it only kicked in the day before.

No, it certainly does have to do with being a Chase cardholder - and being a MP Premier member.

Please see this page: http://www.united.com/web/en-US/cont...ards/upgrade/default.aspx?Mobile=1

If you use your miles to book a ticket for someone - and are a UA Chase cardholder - that person will be upgraded at the end of all of the other members with that status - Platinum, in the example here.

Upgrading award tickets

Premier members who are primary cardholders for certain Chase-issued credit cards are eligible for Complimentary Premier Upgrades when traveling on award tickets on United-operated flights. The following credit cards qualify for this benefit:

MileagePlus Explorer
MileagePlus Explorer for Business
OnePass Plus
World MasterCard for Business
Presidential Plus
Presidential Plus for Business
MileagePlus Club Card
MileagePlus Club Business Card

With only 12 F seats, it's highly unlikely that this happened as a result of them being a Cardholder is the point I'm making. They can give those "complimentary upgrades" to cardholders because in reality it almost never happens. It's MUCH more likely that he was upgraded due to status, as that would have placed him above where he would've been on the list for just having a credit card.

It's quite complicated how it all works but here:

"The list continues as such, except 500 milers, which can only clear 120 hours out for GS's, 100 hours out for 1K's, 72 hours out for 1P's, 48 hours out for 2P's, 36 hours out for 3P's, and 24 hours out for GM's. If the upgrade does not clear at the window (which is very possible, it's not that you get upgraded if there's a seat available, but rather it's still coming from the same inventory), you can still clear anytime until departure."

I am indeed listed as a cleared upgrade on the mobile app. Additionally looking at my boarding pass, my name has my dads account number, not mine, and says primer platinum. The change in allowing to award travel to be upgraded and for the purchasers status to be applied because of the new mileage plus make the most sense. That's what I wanted to know, thanks!

And no my dad does NOT have a Chase card, just to clear that up. He just flies a lot.
