Problem With Delta Online Reservations?

Thu Apr 19, 2012 10:59 am

Forum Folks,

Has anyone else noticed an oddity with Delta's web reservations? Here's what I'm talking about. I was on the web site this morning checking on prices for an ABR-FRA trip in May. The outbound segment gives me an itinerary choice that says there is only 1 stop. But, after looking at the details, it says there is a plane change in DTW. So, there are actually 2 stops, one in MSP (always have to go through MSP on Delta Connection from ABR) and one at DTW before going on to FRA. It never mentions the flight number for the DTW to FRA segement! I never had this issue with NW...don't know why Delta does it. Misleading as far as I'm concerned...

That's because Delta uses the same flight number (142) for MSP-DTW and DTW-FRA. I've seen the same on United, one example is UA50/51 from CLE to FRA via EWR and back.

I don't know the reason for it, but I do know that it can cause problems with FF miles.
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

This practice of using a flight number between multiple city pairs involving a "change of gauge" is to show a "direct" flight service in global distribution systems.......namely DL service MSP-FRA will appear first as "direct" flight 142, with a 1 stop and plane change disclosure. A very common practice with many airlines to get their airline code to appear first.
Many have argued it is a deceitful practice, but airlines adhere to the rules by disclosing that the stop involves a plane change. You will fly on a A320 MSP-DTW and a 764 DTW-FRA, and that is clearly outlined in the schedule display on delta.com. Once you book DL142 MSP-FRA, you will select seats on the A320 to DTW and the 764 on to FRA, and SkyMiles will accrue on DL142 MSP-FRA as a direct flight.
Another example. DL17 ATL-LAX-SYD. Will display as a direct flight from ATL, but generally involves an aircraft change in LAX....ATL-LAX ops with a 763 most days of the week and connects to the 77L on to SYD.
So, since there is no nonstop service MSP-FRA on any airline, it is to DL's advantage to have their airline code display first on a GDS for this market.
I hope this info helps,
Thomas

Okay, that makes sense...but imo is kinda deceiving! I don't remember ever running across this issue with NW. They apparently didn't have the practice of different aircraft/segments having the same flight number??

NW in the last few years did not generally have domestic to international through flights. Domestically, on the other hand, it was quite common.

They call it delta.dumb for a reason... that's just how their system is set up. It's really dumb but technically you are only taking two flights. Although it is more than one stop. What really sucks is if it's a single flight number for say PHX-JFK-ATL they'll only give you mileage for PHX-ATL (they calculate the mileage for a direct flight and that's what you get).
