do I need to register somewhere? (anything similar to Australian ETA or US visa waiver program?).
No. As a US citizen (presuming you are) you will just need to fill out the white card if you have to go through immigration to collect you bags. Leave the "Address in the UK" section blank and just explain that you're leaving right away to the immigration officer.
However, I believe that UA
are generally very good at interlining baggage, even if you're bookings are on separate PNRs. If they are on one PNR they should interline your bags automatically, confirm with the agent that they are doing. If the UA
/BD sectors are on different PNRs just give the agent your connecting flight confirmation and they would most likely agree to tag your luggage to your final destination.

You'll stay in Terminal 1 (if you're on a PMUA flight)
If you're flying PMCO you'll arrive in T4
, but the procedure is basically identical: follow the purple signs to flight connections and you'll get an airside bus to T1.
If you need to get your BD
boarding pass at LHR
(but your luggage is interlined) then you can still transfer airside: there is an airside transfer checkin in T1 or you can checkin at the BD
lounge (if you're eligible)
