PTVs On AF 747-400s?

Fri Apr 20, 2012 10:22 pm

In June I might fly on an AF 747-400 from CDG-SFO, and therefore wonder if their 747-400s have PTVs in the Y-cabin.

As I have understood it, AF is about to retire their old 747 fleet, so my expectations are not too high about the whole experience.

I believe only F-GITH, GITI and GITJ have them in the main deck Y cabin, and the others only have them on the upper deck. This information could be out of date, though.
The biggest mistake made by most human beings: Listening to only half, understanding just a quarter and telling double.

Yeah, I know that those 3 have it, but how about the rest of the fleet?

Air France is now operating a fleet of 7 B744. They will be remaining in service until 2016.

Beside F-GITH / TI / TJ, Air France will continue to operate F-GEXB, F-GITD, F-GITE, F-GITF.
Those last 4 aircraft will be fully retrofitted before the end of 2012 with brand new cabin (Seats, Galley, Toilets, etc...) and IFE (PTVs in all classes and brand new Panasonic IFE system).
The first aircraft is currently under modifications at AF maintenance in CDG. They will have a new configuration of 36J (iso 40) and 396 Y. No Premium Voyageur will be installed in the B744.

Two of them should reconfigured for the summer 2012, so you have 5 chances on 7 to get one on your CDG-SFO flight ...

I thought they would be retired earlier, but I am not complaining.

Thanks, good to know.

I one more question, does the UD Y-cabin usually fill up before OLCI opens up? I would love to experience the UD on the 744, but dont know if it is worth the extra €50.

B747forever, I flew on an AF 744 last year from CDG to MEX. I was offered a seat on the Upper Deck and it was only about 1/3rd full. I had a full row to myself. Fantastic experience and well worth paying the extra if you can. Loads of leg room and you are guarenteed a seatback tv. Looking out the window when on the ground is very interesting because of the hight. So go for it

The were supposed to be retired by 2014/15 but AF will finally keep 7 of them until 2016/2017, that's why it was decided last year to refurbish them completely.

Paying an extra 50€ to seat at the U/D DEFINATELY worth it !!!, particularly on such a long flight.

Usually, AF keeps the seat at the upper deck for its Platinum/Gold/Elite etc... FF members ... so try to book one as a "Comfort Seat" asap.
SFO is a very popular destination in France and flights are always full during the summer.
You'll have a quite cabin at the upper deck, a better seat pitch, a faster service (2 F/A for 60 PAX) and you are sure to get a PTV, whatever the reg. of the aircraft you are on, as they all have PTVs at the upper deck already.

When are you planning to fly to SFO ? AF will have 2 x Daily flights to SFO this summer (1 x B744 + 1 x B772ER)

Good that they decided to refurbish them and add PTVs to the whole Y-cabin.

I know about the second flight, but I much rather fly on the 747. Besides, I am only connecting at SFO to LAX.
