Interesting Thai/Malay Domestic Flights

Sun Apr 22, 2012 4:03 pm

I'm in Bangkok for three days in May with not much to do. I've been a couple of times before and this time just stopping over. Does anybody know of any interesting domestic flights? Unusual or rare aircraft I could get on? Would be happy to try out something in Thailand or Malaysia.

Not too familiar with Thailand ...

Regarding Malaysia:

Berjaya Air Dash-7 from SZB (KL-Subang) to TOD (Tioman Island).
See: berjaya-air.com (flights to TOD are guaranteed Dash-7 because runway at TOD is too short for the AT7)

An interesting regional airline is Firefly.
Although they only operate brand new ATR72-500 they are a nice airline with really low fares. See: fireflyz.com.my
I miss the sound of rolls royce darts and speys

In Thailand you can try Orient Thai, Nok Air, Bangkok Airways, Air Asia... I think Orient Thai would be the most interesting option. You may also fly to neighboring countries like Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam with very interesting airlines, however this will require a visa for German nationals usually, and be way more expensive than a domestic flight i.e. to Phuket.

If you are in for something unique try PEN-LGK which can be flonw on FY (ATR 72-500), AK (A320-200) or MH (B737-400) which is an amazingly short hop with a block time of 30 minutes.

Like what MHG mentioned, you can also get on Berjaya Air's Dash-7 flight (which is pretty much the only place you can get a Dash-7 in Asia these days IIRC, minus those minor Indonesian carriers which I'm also unsure if they do fly those).

Although non-domestic, you can try flying Wings Air PEN-MES also on an ATR 72-500. It's an pretty unusual airline that little has heard of. Another choice, although not unusual or rare aircraft would be flying AK from KUL to anywhere else and try their famous Nasi Lemak which is one of the nicest meals I have ever tasted in the air (yes the taste is even comparable or better than the F/J meals I've had).

Agree with the nice airline part but not the low fares. Their prices were always exorbitant when I check. They did manage to offer a nice deal for KUL-BKI (on their B738 which has been phased out from the airline) for a little more than 50 MYR all-in once though, but that's all. Their ATR flights are pretty expensive by Asian standards.

Also as reifel mentioned you can try One-Two-Go (subsidiary of Orient Thai) who flies MD-80s from DMK-HKT. A good chance to use Bangkok's old airport! You can also fly BKK-USM on Bangkok Airways (PG) as they offer lounge access to all passengers, even Y class, in BKK and USM airport is totally open air which I think is pretty interesting although I have never been there myself.
