Why Long Delay On New JL8 NRT-BOS Flights?

Tue Apr 24, 2012 12:00 pm

Hi there

I might need to fly to Boston in a couple of weeks from Singapore, basically for a day. In trying to find the best schedule, I thought of flying via NRT and try out JL's new 787 service. However, it seems the three flights that have been operated so far have departed abour 45mins late, although they did arrive roughly on schedule. Should I go by the assumption that this flight will be departing late for the next few weeks and perhaps consider alternatives given that my potential itinerary does not allow for delays?

Is this because it is a new a/c on a new route?

No flight is ever guaranteed to take off without a delay is it? You could book on another carrier only to find that on the day circumstances beyond the airlines control (lets say weather for example) delay you anything from 5 minutes to 5 hours - highly unlikely, but you never know.

Sorry, I know that isn't what you expected someone to say but picking a flight that isn't going to potentially suffer a delay is something no mortal can possibly choose.

If they expect favorable winds they might purposely leave late so as not to spend an extra hour in Boston. It allows for easier connection logistics at NRT.

Maybe it's just me, but I could not care less how late a plane leaves, I care how late it arrives. If it arrives roughly on time, is that not what matters?

Agree with sw733.

Also, in the excellent trip report from abrelosojos on the inagaural JL8 it departed 30 min.+ late because of celebrations over the first longhaul JL 787 flight, first Asia-BOS flight etc. Could be another reason.

JL has one of the highest 'on time records' in the whole industry. You can rely that this airline is on time with 99% assurance.
