Best Livery Ever Painted On An Aircraft

Thu Apr 26, 2012 9:00 pm

I have had a search through the forums and can't find any topic like this one in the last 8 years and I'm sure there have been some more contenders since then!

Simple question, who do you think holds the award for the best looking colour-scheme on an aircraft?

Braniff certainly had the best in the seventies, especially the Alexander Calder aircraft.

Depends on the aircraft type. I think that Frontier has the best A320 family livery. Any livery looks great on a 737.

That looked more like a 1 year old playing with pastels. That paint job was hideous! I am glad it is gone.

That big B747 painted in orange going between HNL and DFW was eye catching.

If we're talking about regular liveries, I'm still very partial to the 777 in its original BA scheme:

The "Landor" livery looks rather majestic on any aircraft, but somehow the proportions on the tail seem just right on this particular aircraft.

As for special liveries, my all-time favourite is CX's original "Spirit of Hong Kong" 747-200:

In all its elegant simplicity, it is very clear about the city it is promoting.

SInce I should probably include something that's actually flying, my current favourite is this 767:

It may be very brown indeed, but come on - paint your private widebody to look like a bandit when you're Roman Abramovich, of all people? Think of him what you will, but that does show a sense of humour.

The Iron Maiden "Ed Force One" was interesting. Dull name, but really nice livery. It was a 737 if I am not mistaken.

The best and most beautiful is the KLM livery, especially on the MD-11. It drives me close to orgasm when watching that plane

And I'm sure I'll get flamed you advocating for "Euro White"

Quoting byronicle6 (Reply 13):

Now that looks VERY smart! I'd only ever seen it on the A320 and 77W - but I think it looks great on anything. I just wish that NZ would adopt it as their real livery! What with the colour black and the silver fern it is great tribute to the country!

Other than the celebration of the indigenous culture on Wunala etc, I was trying to think how QF could adopt a similar "image" of Australia on their aircraft and it became very cliched very quickly! I guess the giant roo is enough of a giveaway

I really did like that livery and I'm sad that it got replaced by the Deltaflot colors. This livery was a good compromise between modernization and brand continuity. I wish it was still in use today, although I quite like the current DL colors. Deltaflot was a HORRIBLE idea. The flag of SERBIA on the tail? WTF?

Eww. Looks like an idealized, retro San Francisco vomited all over the A340. The Avro looks like it was dipped up to the windows in a mixture of bile and corn.

As far as commercial liveries go, I liked NW's "Bowling Shoe" colors, especially because their fleet at the time (747, DC-10, DC-9, 727) had a lot of structure higher up on the airframe (engines, upper deck, etc.)

And you'd deserve it.

All the cliches in one on that livery:

1) Billboard
2) Eurowhite
3) All attention directed at the tail

They keep their planes clean, so it generally looks good (hear that, AF?) but it's not an interesting livery at ALL. QR is much more interesting.

You can't beat the Landor colours, I still remember feeling better about being on a Landor 747 rather than a World Tail plane.

UTA French Airlines had a great livery too, very ahead of its time and looked fantastic on the 744.

New Canadian Airlines livery looks fresh and has been improved a lot. The goose is perfect for the Canadian Airlines as it has a history of logo - the goose. New goose logo is unique cos of the design. I really like Canadian's goose logo however i don't like eurowhite again. It doesn't really look attractive anymore.

Quoting DocLightning (Reply 39):
All the cliches in one on that livery:

1) Billboard
2) Eurowhite
3) All attention directed at the tail

You're probably right. I don't know what it is but EK's livery says to me "understated" and "stylish" wheres others for others - ahem NZ ahem - I agree entirely with your points. Maybe it is (no, probably it is!) my Emirates style rose-tinted spectacles which make me like it so much! But at the same time I think that points to the strength of their brand.

Of the one-off liveries, I do like Peter Max Y2K, but here's my favorite:

Braniff had the best regular livery. I like all the pastels of the No Plain Plane. But the Ultra scheme was most handsome.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned this absolute beauty of a livery. I can't wait until they paint the rest of the A340-s and send one to MIA where I'll be for the next few months!!!
