Updated: No Warm Nuts On AA In F On Some Routes

Fri May 11, 2012 9:52 pm

Original topic that I posted on Oct 2, 2011:
http://www.airliners.net/aviation-fo...general_aviation/read.main/5270223

So, I had the pleasure of flying AA in F on MIA-MSY yesterday, May 10, 2012 (and we were only delayed about 45 minutes - what a joy!). Anyway, this was the exact same flight and exact same time of day that my earlier post about "no nuts served in F" was made last October.

I find it interesting that one of our self-proclaimed "AA Experts" on here insisted that AA did in fact serve warm nuts in F on MIA-MSY and that "for whatever reason, my flight just didn't have them that day" when in fact, AA no longer serves warm nuts in F on flights under a certain amount of time / distance.

So, going back to my question from last October, would someone who actually knows (as opposed to someone who thinks he knows everything about AA), please update us on what the policy is? Thanks!

Here's the original post text:

I flew AA MIA-MSY last week in F and was shocked that AA no longer serves warm nuts in F on this flight. Instead, we got a prepackaged pretzel mix of some sort.

I remember flying this route just a few years ago and we were actually served warm nuts and a full, hot dinner!

When did AA stop the warm nuts and (I presume they still serve them on flights longer than xxx miles / y hours)? What flights still get warm nuts?

I was never really nuts about the warm nuts. They were ok, but in my opinion, it would be nice to have a little variety once in a while.

Who cares.... Seriously you're freaking out about some nuts!

Unless you're flying VX, F flights in the US Suck, fact. You might aswell fly Y and save 60%.

At least you have the option. There is no such thing as short haul F in Europe, probably because it would be equally bad. IMO anything under 3/4 hours just isn't worth it and it seems like most corporate / buyers agree.

J & F products from US carriers lag well behind Euro / middle East carriers in any case.

OMG This is another example of FRAUD that is committed on a daily basis by the airlines!!

This will produce less farting in the first class cabin, so I'm all for it. Those nuts cause a fart fest.

Bring one of those hot packs to sit on if you miss warm nuts while flying. Accepted in all classes of service.

Dear N62NA,

I don't think a.net is the perfect forum to ask about specific catering and meal questions and think you will get more positive answers over at flyertalk.com. They have lots of frequent travelers who care about these service items. I will love to help you out, but have not done too many AA domestic flights lately. I have just renewed my EXP status for 2013, so not much more AA flying left for the year. I am sure there will be some cutbacks due to the bankruptcy.

However from my Sky Guide, American Airlines is definitely not serving any meal, hot or cold, on this flight, but they might still served a bowl of warmed nuts to go with your beverage. Some of the off-meal hours flight from ORD to LGA features warmed mixed nuts with beverage and a warmed cookie. However ORD to NYC is always a high yield route, so service tends to be enhanced.

I honestly will not expect it. Eat prior to flight.

If you're flight is under 2.5 hours and outside of regular meal hours, enjoy your cocktails...

Damn, that was hard to find.

AA continues to serve warm nuts as always on flights of 1 hour length or above unless operated by American Eagle, which does not have the ability to heat the nuts on board, and thus, serves them cold.

Sorry you didn't get them, but that's that. Report the flight to customer service for a lazy crew or complain about the catering done at MSY, it could be a local catering problem.

Actually, you will notice it mentions a "light snack" of nuts and a warm cookie, which is served on 1-2 hour flights (2.5 hours outside of meal time).

No doubt, though, folks in marketing make this particular page purposely ambiguous (i.e. not defining "meal times") so that when people complain, they can just point to it and say "we never promised you anything." Very annoying trend among airlines. The webpage also doesn't point out the non-existent meal service on mid-con redeyes, which it should.

So many people on here missing my point. I'm not asking for whether or not you think serving warm nuts in F is good or not, or is something that - if missing - would cause one extreme distress.

Except that isn't relevant to my topic as it doesn't answer my specific question.

Complimentary food service is offered in First Class on all flights systemwide that have flying times over two hours and that operate within traditional breakfast, lunch and dinner times. Generally, a snack service will be provided on flights greater than two and a half hours that fall outside of a traditional meal time. A light snack may include our signature warm mixed nuts and baked on board cookies.

Regardless of whether you are getting a snack or not, you were always served warm nuts in F on MIA-MSY. As stated in the passage that I pasted in above from the link you provided, it doesn't say that the snack is warm nuts and cookies, just that those items are part of the snack service.

You're giving the same pre-programmed response that you did back in October. Sorry, but apparently AA does not serve warm nuts on all flights of 1 hour+ operated by mainline, as my now two experiences on the same flight MIA-MSY has shown.

Well, you have yourself two options here. Either:

A) Believe him that they're supposed to, and for whatever reason didn't; or

B) Fly it again and report back. Three times would be a pattern, IMO.

As Carfield said, it strikes me as unlikely people on here are going to have explicit knowledge of that particular flight. It's a pretty specific question.

I'll actually be flying the return leg MSY-MIA next week, afternoon flight, so we'll see what that brings.

I don't think I've ever read such a confrontational thread starter. You're going to get the same reaction/ answers as you did last year.

EXACTLY!

The lesson here is inconsistency. In regards to quantity and actually serving food, AA meal service is very consistent with domestic breakfast, lunch, and dinner flights. Snack and refreshment flights on the other hand are not so consistent. Perfect example was flying AA 1782 (MCO-JFK) in late 2010. I flew this flight in F three times during a three week span. During this schedule, AA had the flight listed as a ''R'' or refreshment flight. One time I got hot nuts, a cookie and drinks. Another time I got a bag of nuts, a cookie and drinks. The last time all I got was drinks, that's it (no I wasn't sleeping nor was it denied to me because of being NRSA). Is it lazy crew? Is it catering shortages? My hunch with the latter flight is that the crew simply didn't want to serve anyone food (the flight had only 4 pax and the purser had a shitty attitude). Nowadays, I keep my expectations low and just look forward to a few drinks.

A bag of pretzels. (I hate pretzels).

It's not confrontational. If you've flown F or J on AA domestically, the warm nuts were always a nice touch and were served on MIA-MSY. Now, it is highly likely that they aren't anymore (2 out of 2 flights, same exact flight, same time of day is somewhat persuasive evidence).

The pre-programmed response I received from a particular member who considers himself knowlegeable on all things AA and MIA last time around was that "it was a catering issue" and that "all mainline flights in F over an hour still get the warm nuts" (paraphrasing that one).

Clearly, that is not the case, so I was asking in this topic if anyone who actually has any facts can shed any light on this.

Hmmm.
In many parts of Canada it is almost a 'standard' for new cars to include heated seats, which certainly has value in the winter.
Perhaps AA could install some in F to ensure any and all forms of nuts could be warmed on every flight?

OK, despite assurances from some on here that claim to be "in the know" about AA, I flew back MSY-MIA earlier this week, 12:40pm flight out of MSY, and we got.... no warm nuts, just a bag of pretzels.

"Catering issue" - I think not.

I've rather enjoyed my two experiences in F with AA. The food was good (not spectacular, but good). Service was attentive.

I think half the population is protective of their warm nuts.
Quoting LONGisland89 (Reply 14):

That could be why my experience was excellent. One was a breakfast flight and one a dinner flight. Plenty of drinks, snacks, and the cookies (which I felt bad turning down as I was full).

Quoting N62NA (Reply 15):

Get used to it. The number of children with nut allergies is exploding. I wish someone would figure out why. 8% of my daughter's school has nut allergies, so expect in a decade or two the warm nuts to be a thing of the past. There is a reason supermarkets now sell "sunflower butter" as a peanut butter replacement. Its not just for the kids with allergies, its so their friends may still have a favorite meal without the need for the Epipen; for kids will coat each other with their lunch.

Quoting LONGisland89 (Reply 14):

Now that makes sense. One poor attitude f/a can ruin a flight. Everyone has a bad day, but taking it out on passengers (in particular front cabin passengers) is not going to help. In general, my experience on AA has been great in 2012! Only one snippy f/a (right after they found out some bad news in the b/k process, so understandable, but not fun as a passenger).

I hope AA is able to improve consistency post b/k labor rule changes.
