CLE (area)-BRE Nov 19-26

Mon May 14, 2012 10:16 pm

Hello. I am planning a trip from the CLE area (PIT, DTW..anything in driving distance), to Bremen, Germany. I would prefer to fly with a European carrier, with a PTV. I don't really have a preference of carrier, but please throw out a few ideas. I plan to meet up with my parents in Europe for the leg to/from BRE, and they will be flying out of YUL (have yet to determine the flight).

Thanks!

suggestions:

British Airways via LHR (no flights to BRE, see below)
KLM via AMS (be aware of 10-abreast eco aboard the 777)
Lufthansa via FRA or MUC (avoid 747s if PTV is a must)

Amadeus.net is your friend, it's worth spending some time on that site. If you're up for driving in Germany, you can fly to HAM or HAJ which will give you many more options. You could even fly EWR-HAM with your parents on UA.

thanks, I would really like to go via LHR because I don't fly that often and I enjoy BA's product and would love to see LHR. I have also thought about EWR as the 767-400 would be a nice treat, but how much of a mess is EWR during the evening rush?

You can fly LH to FRA or DUS by taking UA or AC to YYZ. No need to reclaim your bags or reclear security in YYZ.

I have flown in to HAM and FRA and taken the train to BRE back when I used to go to BRE quite a bit and wanted to try new routes. Even from FRA, you can get on the train at the airport and just make one change, usually Hannover, and be in Bremen in about 4 hours.

See, I wouldn't mind driving or taking a train from HAM or FRA, but my parents being older I don't think they would be up to doing anything but flying directly into BRE, and since I am meeting them overseas, I think I should also fly into BRE and also that I should too. I will see if HAM is an option with my family picking us up.

Odd... most older people on this side of the pond wouldn't think twice about taking the train, but hesitate to get on a plane.

In any case, HAM to Bremen main station is a piece of cake. The airport has its own train station which is served by commuter trains. You take one to Hamburg main station and make your one and only connection to any of a multitude of trains to Bremen.
FRA to Bremen isn't tricky either. Just as SW733 said, you can hop on a long-distance train at FRA and make one connection in Hannover... or, come to think of it, you can also take a direct train which will take you through the gorgeous Rhine valley as it trundles along. Your parents would love that sight, even in case they already know it. If they're lucky, they can even eavesdrop on a British tour guide explaining the sights to his travel group.

Keep in mind that motorway A1 between Hamburg and Bremen is under major re-construction now and surely into November. While it is not as bad with traffic and accidents as back a while, travel times are hard to calculate. And HAM is on the far side of the city when coming from Bremen, having to use either the (very busy) tunnel under the river Elbe or to drive through the city.
For ease of travel, flying into BRE should be the preferred option.

Taking into account that your older folks will accompany you, the following weird routing probably is not an option: Fly across the pond into MAN, then continue MAN - BRE on FR on a separate ticket.

HT, thanks and you helped me on my other trip last year or so! My family across the pond say that HAM is too far to drive and also my parents want to fly into BRE.
I see that there are flights for me from CLE-IAD-FRA-BRE, and I know the 747-800 is running that route, but the -400 comes up.-- can anyone confirm?

Do you have any dates and flight numbers for that connection?

I don't see the -800, but using lufthansa.com 17-11-12 to 24-11-12

You would be on LH419, which is operated with the 747-8 during summer. However, the summer timetable is in effect only until 27OCT2012, so your flight will be operated according to the winter timetable. Alas, I don't know where the 747-8 will be sent during winter.

Aloges,
Thanks for your help. so the chances of having PTV's in the -400 are slim?
I've also thought about ORD-DUB on EI, and then on FR to BRE, if that's even a route.

You're welcome!

As for PTVs, they are rolling them out across those 744s that will remain in the fleet for some time. A lot can happen between now and November and even so, you may get unlucky and end up on (one of) the last aircraft without personal IFE.

ORD-DUB on EI plus DUB-BRE on FR is something I wouldn't do even if FR flew that route. The chance of missing the check-in time for FR plus the certainty of extra charges for your luggage, the check-in itself and whatever else FR throw at you make that trip a rather discouraging prospect... and since you're meeting your elderly parents, you need as much reliability as you can get.

That stuff is for solo trips.

If only there was a better link between BRE and ZRH on weekends... then you could all fly Swiss to Europe (from/through YUL or BOS, for example) and then to BRE. But OLT Express offers just one daily flight on weekends as opposed to three on workdays.

This is a pretty interesting puzzle, actually... all possible options have their drawbacks. Apart from the codeshares on DL and UA that you need to filter out, you could end up connecting at EWR, JFK, CDG and FRA. Some of those are bad for connections, some are worse. And if you do get KLM to AMS, you'll be on a 10-abreast 777.

For the dates in concern I also get the following routing on DL:
CLE - MSP - AMS - BRE
returning BRE - CDG - JFK - CLE.
Longhaul flights are on DL A333 and B763 respectively.
Connection times at AMS, CDG and JFK are 2 hours each and 1h40 at MSP, so all are manageable even connecting from CDG T2G to T2E.

Return also can be managed as BRE - AMS - DTW - CLE again on a DL A330 across the pond.
Also MSP instead of DTW if preferred possible.

How are the 763's? Do they have PTV's? I think I would be connecting in AMS, as my mom had a bad experience in CDG once.

Welcome to the club, but with the recent improvements at CDG T2 I would not hesitate to connect there with 2 hours allowed for it. Connecting Schengen to U.S. at AMS also requires a heck of time with the additional screening at the gate. 90 minutes should make for a leisurely transfer even though people will claim they have made it in 25 minutes or so.

Moin moin,
There are really only 2 carriers serving BRE if intercont connections are needed and that is LH and KL, nothing else is viable. Whatever your preference is, will be your choice. If no PTV 's available (which some people, like me, consider a grace) I suggest you take along some of these square things, they are called books and most are quite interesting. Eastbund a good night's sleep anyhow.

FRA-BRE by train right now is not such a good idea, they have cancelled all through trains, the stop in HAJ is between 20 and 30 minutes and the ICE goes in 2 hour intervals only. The ICs going on the other hours are junk.

Driving from HAM to BRE is to be avoided by all means as long as the Autobahn is still a constructions site. The tnnel underneath the river is also a congestion hot spot. HAM of course gives you a better choice, if BA is a favorite carrier take it. City train to central station and from there the yellow/blue Metronome trains, total transit about 2 hours airport to central station BRE.
