Famous Persons Of Aviation.

Sun May 20, 2012 11:44 am

There were many famous pioneers of aviation.
Amongst them....Otto Lilienthal, Octave Chanute, Louis Blerio,Hugo Junkers the famous known ones.
but however only the Wright Brothers are remembered promptly, probably because 1st powered flight was by them.....unfortunately the 3rd guy in the group Charles Taylor that manufactured the engine was not remembered with them.

It could also be possible that there was someone who was more successfull than the above, but whose success was not known publically so History has not given due credit to them.

Your views, since persons from the tech/Ops field would probably have a lot of knowledge on the same.

Karl Jatho was a German entrepreneur who made a powered flight earlier than the Wright Brothers, but it was/is considered to be "uncontrolled". HAJ's GA-terminal is named after him as is one lounge at HAJ.

The only *Famous person of aviation* I ever happened to see live was Chuck Yeager, opening the 2002 (or 2005 ?) Edwards AFB Open House and giving a speech afterwards, him having to be dragged from the mike as he wouldn't stop. Was sure grand listening to him.

It depends on where you're from

The French remember Roland Garros (mainly because of the tennis tournament rather than for his achievements)
The Brazilians remember Santos Dumont for 2 reasons. There is the airport SDU in Rio. Brazilians also claim that Santos Dumont is the first person to fly an airplane that could take off on its own rather than being launched.

Charles Kingsford Smith is a pretty iconic aviator for Australians -- he was responsible for much of the early proving work that has brought the industry here to what it is today (especially across the Pacific).

The fact that our biggest and busiest airport is named after him is very telling.

In Denmark I most people know about Ellehammer. He was the first person to fly in Denmark, but his aircraft was tied to a pole in the center.

In 1912 he build a helicopter which mad a vertical takeoff with pilot.
