Did You Get To Fly On That?

Fri May 25, 2012 4:02 pm

Hello all -

While I can say that I am lucky to have flown on some aircraft that no longer grace the skies, I lament over the types that I was not able to ever fly on and experience. For some of these types, the window of opportunity to do so has either closed or is closing fast. Being born in the mid seventies, I missed out on the bulk of the first generation of jet aircraft (707, DC-8 and some others), but there are some whose number just never came up when playing airliner roulette.

I do travel frequently with my current line of work but it's pretty much all A320s and 737s nowadays. Since I rarely travel internationally, however, I have never set foot on a 747, and it looks like I may never get to as they are slowly being phased out. And even with all the family vacations that I was a part of as a kid, I never got to fly on a DC-10, as prevalent as they were in the states.

While the majority of the A-Net community appears to be very well travelled, was curious to see if there were any of you that missed the boat in regards to a certain type.

I have been flying overseas for years and years and years, and somehow have never taken any of the right airlines to make it on an A330 or A340. It's a real statistical oddity.

I've flown TATL or TPAC on 747s (1 through 4), DC-10s, L-1011s, MD-11s, 757s, 767s (2 and 3), and 777-200ERs... but never on a big Airbus. The closest I ever came was domestic US and European flights on A300s and A310s.

I missed the boat on the DC-10 and probably the MD-11. I just missed the CV-880 era at TWA, only if I was born a couple of year earlier.

You could say I missed all the cool propliners, but they were before my time (in passenger service anyway).

I haven't flown on an A380, yet.... They will be around for a while so I am sure I'll get a chance.

I've been on so much with my travel. 717, 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777...not 787 yet. A310, A318, A319, A320, A320, A330, A340, A380. I'm just missing the A300. DC-10, MD-11, L1011.

I've been lucky.

In the jet era, I've only missed out on the Convair jets, Caravelle, MD-11, A380 and A330/340 series. With the bulk of my international travel having been done in the 80s/90s, I still have probably have flown more miles internationally on the L-1011 than any other type.

I missed the boat on Concorde.
I had an opportunity to fly on her in 1996 and didn't take it. Very SAD indeed, from many different angles.

Not me. I had 3 CV-880 flights on Delta. My Dad, who flew B-29's in WW2, loved the 880. I'd say I have to agree with him.
I also flew Delta's DC-9-14. I remember boarding from the rear air stair at the old ATL and always thought that was a great experience too. I flew 727QC's with BN and EA, DC-8-61's and 63's with DL, UA, ONA , and Capitol,747-100's with DL and AA, DC-8-52's DL. I really miss the old days of flying, the assortment of planes you could fly on back in the early 60's thru the early 70's can never be matched today

I've been on the 717, 737, 757, 767, 777, A310, A319, A320, A330, MD-80 series, as well as a lot of RJs. I',m too young to have been on the 707 and 727, but I do hope to get a ride on the 747 before it is phased out and the A380. Whenever I've flown internationally, it seems to have been on the 767 and 777 instead of the 747. Airlines tend to favor using those aircraft for international flights out of ATL rather than the 747 (except for KE). I wish DL would bring some 747s to ATL, and envy the days where you could fly a 747 on a domestic route.

I've flown the A320-100 and 767-400 but always wanted to catch a ride on the Mercure and of course Concorde... my most wanted ride is an A340-200 primarily because there are not many of them left... ultimate would be the VC-10... chances of that being pretty much zilch.

I missed my opportunity on the 707 (even when I had the chance, I was sick and had to cancel)... 737-100 I missed.

DC-10 never flown on...

Concorde, never flown with her

747SP not flown with...

Most of the flights these days are Boeing or Airbus, I am thankful for 300+ flights on the MD11 though, great experience.

Looking forward to the 747-8 intercontinental

And when Air Greenland changes their schedule, I have chances to fly on their Dash 7's

That trip also involves IAH-FRA on the A380 which I am really excited about.

I really hated the 732s but now I appreciate them.

I haven't been on a DC-9 yet (unless the MD-80 counts). It looks like Delta is drastically reducing its DC-9 flying over the summer, and I hope to catch one soon. ATL-SAV and DTW-ORD seem like good choices.

I'm glad I was able to fly on a 747 classic with KLM before they retired.

I was born in 1980, so I pretty much missed all the first generation jets, but we also never flew anywhere when I was a kid, so I didn't actually fly for the first time until I was 23. That means I also missed out on planes were still in service during my life but were mostly gone by 2003, like the 727, L1011, and 732.

I've also never gotten to fly on a DC9, and it's not likely I will before DL retires the last of them. It's just never come up that I've needed to travel to the places they fly to.

I very rarely travel overseas, so I've flown on very few widebodies. So no DC10s and not much chance of an MD11. I've never actually flown on any Airbus widebody yet. I'll probably never fly on an A300 or A310, but there's still a chance of flying on an A330 or A340 someday, and I'm already booked on an A380 flight to Sydney this October.

I never got to fly on any Fokker aircraft. I lived in Raleigh during the last years of Midway Airlines, who flew F100s there, but they went under about 2 years before I took my first flight.

Getting into regional airliners, I've flown numerous CRJs and ERJs and a few turboprops, but there are lots of turboprops I've never flown on -- I've never been on any Dash-8, ATR, Do-328, B1900, SAAB 2000, and probably others that I didn't think of. Of those the one I'm most likely to fly on at some point is the Dash 8-Q400 since Horizon flies them out of SMF, my current home airport. While there are still some ATRs and B1900s flying in the US I'm not likely to need to go to the places they fly to.

but was never on the Concorde... but my Dad was and I have the Concorde-shaped bottle opener and Concorde Matches (Air France) to prove it!

Have been lucky to fly on many types incl L1011, DC10 & 742. One big miss for me is the MD11. KL used to fly to YVR every summer, but I could never justify the prices vs direct to the UK - now it seems they are not coming back, that is a big regret, particularly as I could probably combine it with a ARJ (to LCY) or F70 (to LBA) which are both outstanding on my log.

Another is the Shorts 360, always meant to fly the 8P one - and tried - but always got the B1900. They are now retired but there is a hope one will be back for the peak summer schedule. Will try very hard to make it, but after paying $350 for a short HS748 pleasure flight, not sure if my accounting dept (wife) will allow it...

A strange one I have not yet flown is the 77W - done the 77L, but not the 77W. Sadly I guess there will be many opportunities as 747's disappear.

Another odd one as a YVR local and YVR now being my top airport is never flying on a "classic" Dash 8 (done the Q400) as it is the #1 type at YVR and also the Beaver floatplane, dozens of departures a day - need to do that one day.

Well, if you mean 747-100 to 747-400. They are getting smaller chances, but LH and KE ordered the 747-8 intercontinental, so maybe another 20 years of chance to fly a 747. Not the classic ones, but still a 747.

Since I was born in 1991, and I've only recently started flying frequently, I've missed out on quite a bit   However, I have been on some rarities:

DL in and out of CVG. Those things screamed, and I always enjoyed the ride.

Quoting SW733 (Reply 3):
...not 787 yet.

God willing, if the stars are aligned, and if the Kami grace me, I'll fly it from HND to ITM this year!

I've been on all of the CRJ models except for the new 1000, the MD88, MD90, 732, 737, 738, most likely the 739 when DL gets a hold of them next year, the 744 last year to Japan, both models of the 757, the 762, 63, and 64, the A318, A319, A320, and A330. I'll hop on the A321 out of PHX sometime on US.

I missed by 6 months DL flight 44 CVG-CDG on the 772.    that is when DL began scaling down at CVG and I was pissed when I found out it wasn't on a 777. I'll probably be on the 777 to Japan this year though.

Just going off what relatively accessible during my lifetime (born in 91) I've been lucky to get the 731, 732, 722, 742, M8S (couldn't say the type) and the DC-10-30. In fact, the DC-10 might well be the type I've flown the most long-haul, although the 777 is probably snapping on its heels.

So what have I missed? 721 (were there any of these left in the 90s?), 741, 743, M11, anything by Fokker and (very sadly) the L1011

I honestly can't remember if I've ever been on a DC-9 or not.

Do the 736 and 318 count as endangered aircraft?

I've been on the MD-80, 732, 733, 734, 735, 737, 738, 739, 743, 744, 763, 772, 773, 77W, A300B, A310-200, A310-300, 319, 320, 321, 332, 333, 343, 345, 346, ATR72.

Having being born in '95, I feel that this list is pretty comprehensive, I just need to get on a 757 and DC-9! Living in Singapore, this is no ordinary task. Last summer I attempted to log the 757 twice. The first flight was LAX-SFO on UA which got swapped to a 320, the same happened to my latter flight between SFO and ORD. Hope they're around for a few years to come so I can have another stab at them. Unfortunately, even during my bi-annual visits to the States, I never get the opportunity to try out the DC-9.

I also wish I hadn't missed the boat on TG's MD-11's. Doesn't help seeing those cargo DC-10's and 72's still buzzing around SIN from time to time.

As for the others:

732, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9ER (WN, CO, LH)
744, 8 (August) (LH, VS)
752, 3 (DL, UA, CO)
763, 4 (OS, CO, UA)
772 (CO, UA)

A319, 20, 21 (OS, LH, UA, US)
A332, 3 (LH, US)
A346 (LH)
A380 (August on LH)

F70 F100 (VO/OS)
MD-80, 2,3,7 (AA, DL)
MD90 (DL)
DC9 (DL)

Q400/DHC8 (VO, 9L)

ERJ35/40/45/70/75
CRJ 1,2,7,9

I would love to try a 717, but Volotea doesn't really fly anywhere I want to go and I try to keep within Star when I am abroad, so no DL either.

I have flown on 57 different types/models, including the BAC-111...a personal favorite, and the BOAC VC-10. My first flight ever was on a DC-3, and my first jet flight was the 707.

But the question is what plane do I regret not having gotten to fly. That is easy for me...the Caravelle!!!!

United flew the Caravelle through Columbus when I was a student at Ohio State, but it was strictly a first class fare plane, and I could not afford to buy a first class ticket, so I never got to fly on one. My biggest regret!! That would have been so great to fly on one of those!
Those who want to do something will find a way; those who don't will find an excuse.

As far as jet aircraft goes, I've been very fortunate to fly most. A couple of types have illuded me.

Boeing: 753, 747SP

I have over 700 flights as passenger, byt the 757-300 is still missing. I was booked on Condor, FRA-Tennerife in the late 90's but they changed equipment at the last minute.

Illushin: IL-86, IL 96.

Was booked on a Aeroflot IL-96 LCA-Moscow in May 2010, but they switched Aircraft to a A320. Lost out again.

Tupolev: TU 204.

Been lucky to fly on the TU 134 and 154. Unfortunately, it looks like I'll never make the TU 204.

Last, but not least. I never got to fly on the Concorde.

Flown on (airlines are known, but I might have experienced the planes with other airlines as well)

A319 (BA)
A320 (BA, JQ, NZ, TT)
A321 (LH)
A330-200 (EK, QF)
A330-300 (QF, SQ, TG)
A340-300 (EK)
A340-500 (TG)
A340-600 (TG)
A380-800 (QF, SQ)
717-200 (QF)
737-300 (CA, LH, DY)
737-400 (QF, SK)
737-500 (SK)
737-600 (SK)
737-700 (SK)
737-800 (DY, QF, FR, SK, DJ)
747-300 (AN, NZ, QF)
747-400 (LH, SQ)
767-200 (CA)
767-300 (AN, QF)
777-200 (SQ)
777-200ER (TG)
777-300 (SQ)
777-300ER (EK, SQ)
DC-9 (SK)
E190 (DJ)
F50 (XR)
MD-80 (SK)

These are the ones I know I have flown. But, there would be about 14 years of flying of which I didn't know what I was flying (or cared even). Some, like the 747-300 I have deduced, although I could have been on the -200 version, but I doubt I ever flew the 747-100. As for DC-10 don't think I have flown them. MD-11 is a no, I'm pretty sure. 737-200 (maybe), 737-100, probably not. A300/A310, no idea.

The big gap (IMO), is the 757. I don't have any plans on flying to the US, so don't know when I'll get on that plane, nor do I know if I ever will.

787 is missing, but I'm sure I'll get on that plane soon enough, either SQ, QF, QR, JQ or NZ (5 most likely for me). A350 I'm sure I'll fly as well (SQ or QR being most likely).

The other big gap is regional jets/turbo props. Not too many of them where I fly, with the exception of F50, F100 and E190 (sure I'll get F100 soon enough), might see some ATR72's or Q400's here as well. As for ERJ's, most likely on a trip to US.

Big gap for me is no experience of any MD/DC type. Only flown on one type of prop too, a JS-41. Lucky enough to have flown L1011 and IL-86, and A346, among many others.

Quoting CPHFF (Reply 25):
I have over 700 flights as passenger, byt the 757-300 is still missing. I was booked on Condor, FRA-Tennerife in the late 90's but they changed equipment at the last minute

Come to SEA! DL has several 753s scheduled this summer.

I'm missing a lot of modern types, mainly because my travel is mostly domestic.

737-500
737-600
747-400
767-200
767-400
777-200
777-200LR
777-300ER
A318
A321
All Airbus widebodies
MD-11
DHC-200/300/400
CRJ-700
E135/140/145
E170
E190/195

I've picked up some of the odd or old (for me) ducks:

727-200 (NW)
757-300 (all the time, it seems)
MD-90 (DL, in April)
DC9-30 (NW)
DC9-50 (NW)
DC10-30/40 (many times on NW before the 753s took over)
747-200 (got lucky on a early 90s NW flight SEA-MSP)
DHC-100 (Piedmont, last year)

I'm happy that I flew on a DL L-1011 between SAN and LAX back in the mid 90's and then a DL 727 from SLC to MSY around 2000 or 2001.

Biggest miss was the Concorde.

Never flown any wide-body Airbi or on the MD 11.

Flown 717, 727, 732, 733, 734, 735, 737, 738, 744, 752, 762, 763, 764, 772, 772ER, A319, A320, A321, L-1011, DC-10, various RJ's, EMB 120, Saab 340?, Lear 31, Lear 45.

Not sure what Eastern flew between TPA and BOS in the early 70's as I was too young to remember...
