Fri Jun 01, 2012 10:08 am

Which is the longest current/ever B 747 classic route? Longest ever: HKG-LHR or HKG-YVR on CX's B 747-200s?

The longest ever B 747-300 route=HKG-ZRH by Swissair right?

Which is the current longest B 747 classic route?

If memory correct NW briefly operated the 742 on SEA-HKG (5648 nm). That's a little further than YVR-HKG (5555 nm).

NW and JL also used the 742 on JFK-NRT (5861 nm) which is further than both of those.

UA also did JFK-NRT nonstop with their two -222s.

Supposedly NZ did AKL-LAX, which may be second place.

QF used the 747SP on the SYD-LAX route which is 6507 nm. PA possibly used their SP's on the route too.

Another contender could be SAA's round the horn nonstop flights to London not sure how long they were but I believe they were too far for a standard 747-200

You are correct that PA flew this route n/s. I was on it in Aug 1984. Longest flight I've done.

Didn't QF used to operate their Manchester flight in..oh.. about 1986 I think as:

SYD-BOM-LHR-MAN

I'm pretty sure I flew on this when I was a kid.

If I'm correct, SYD - BOM is 5482nm, so that's right up there in terms of distance.

No, QF's AKL-LAX flights were 6504 mi (as opposed to HKG-ZRH which is 5776mi). This surely must be the furthest flight operated by a 747 Classic (excluding the SP)?

AKL-LAX 5652nm NZ flew 742s AKL-LAX and QF 743s at times.

HKG-YVR 5555nm
HKG-LHR 5209nm
HKG-ZRH 5019nm
SIN-LHR 5879 (Did anyone SQ or BA fly this non stop with the classics?)

El Al operated non stop flights to Miami from TLV with it's B742s, 5738nm.

LY operated LAX-TLV flights (eastbound only) with 747s for sure, which is 6581nm, but I do not know if it was done also with the B742s or with B744s only (while B742s flew via JFK or YYZ)

LAX-TLV and MIA-TLV were scheduled flights? When?

IIRC, SA flew IAH-JNB with their SP's in the late 80's.

I found the distance on some travel site:

Distance from Houston to Johannesburg is 14,503 kilometers or 9,012 miles or 7,831 nautical miles. The distance is the theoretical air distance (great circle distance). Flying between the two locations' airports can be a different distance, depending on airport location and actual route chosen.

Scheduled flights? Think they're in the OAG?

Good questions.

I don't believe they were daily flights and for some reason I'm wondering now if they were charters rather than scheduled flights. I definitely remember working them inbound and outbound from Terminal B's north side banjo back in the day.

Since the mid 80s, MIA-TLV closed in 2008, LAX-TLV still running (since 2007 also TLV-LAX nonstop)

No LAX-TLV or MIA-TLV in the 1989 and 1992 OAGs; LAX-TLV is a 744 in the 1995 OAG.

The only year scheduled service I remember with El Al to MIA was with a 762ER.
