Best Way To Travel D.C. To Sydney? A380?

Mon Jul 02, 2012 8:57 pm

Hello Airliners.net!

I'm an intermittent reader of posts here, but I just registered    and this is my first post, so go easy on me if I missed a topic similar to this in the forums!

I'm planning on studying abroad in Sydney within the next year and being in the Washington D.C area on nearly the exact opposite side of the globe from Sydney, there are so many different ways you can get there, on so many different airlines. I've already basically decided that I'm going to fly business class for the longest leg, and I'd LOVE to be able to take an A380 if possible. I'm not at all opposed to stopping in Dubai, since visiting is on my list   , I just don't know what the best route would be (IAD > LAX > SYD; BWI > JFK > DXB > SYD; etc)

Once again, sorry if this isn't something to post here or if its a dumb question!

Maybe EK IAD-DXB-SYD would be nice. Not sure if the IAD-DXB route begins before you travel.

Or maybe AA IAD-LAX and QF (A380) LAX-SYD (Shortest Route).
Let's fly! Unless it's on a CRJ 200, then I'll stay down here.

Quoting anearey (Thread starter):
being in the Washington D.C area on nearly the exact opposite side of the globe from Sydney,

It's not really, that point is just west of the Azores Islands, several thousand kilometer east of Washington.

As a result a Pacific route is much shorter than any Atlantic route. IAD-LAX-SYD is 8495 nm, IAD-DXB-SYD is 12643 or 4148 nm further! That's another 8-9 hours flying time instead of the 18-19 via LAX.

The IAD (or DCA)-LAX -SYD route is the shortest. DCA-DFW-(BNE*)-SYD would work. (*westbound only) both on AA/QF or DCA-SFO-SYD on UA. You could call this the normal routes.
For something different you could consider:
HA from JFK-HNL-SYD (long connection westbound, I think)
KE/JL/Chinese airlines via their home base. This *sometimes* has great fares
TN via LAX, PPT & AKL
NZ via LAX-RAR-AKL-SYD (or RAR-SYD direct)
LA via SCL

How about TG LAX-ICN-BKK-SYD? They offer pretty attractive fares in J at times and you can enjoy the Royal Orchid Spa in BKK too.
One day I will fly around the world!
