What's Your Favorite Runway?

Sat Jul 07, 2012 5:48 am

My favorite is rwy 02/20 at VNO because it has a huge slope at its centre: it goes from 193 to 175msl. You can clearly feel the bottom of the slope on a heavy takeoff from rwy 20.

What's yours?

JNB 03L in a fully laden 346 takeoff run can be fun/terrifying. 21R is slightly less so because there is quite a long stretch of grass beyond the tarmac while less than 500m from the end of 03L is an 8 lane highway.

With it being my home airport, looking out the window I know where various buildings are in relation to the runway, it can feel like forever before you feel the plane start to rotate, often I have felt that "BRACE BRACE BRACE" was coming just before the nose lifts and the gear scrapes the fence.

Being a few hundred feet high already when you cross the fence in a 738 or 744 isn't half as much fun
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

Since the only time I fly is when I go on vacation, whatever runway that's being used for the flight from my home airport to my vacation destination and the runway said flight will be landing on at that destination.

Runway 1L/19R and 1R/19L at LAS are pretty good as they run parallel to Las Vegas Blvd., so you get a really good view of the Strip if you are sitting on the side of the a/c that faces it. It's really cool at night, especially when you land on the 19 end, as the way they typically route flights coming from the East when using that runway, you get a great overview of the Strip from the air.

STL's parallel runways are incredibly huge (in width size). I like them, especially during dark hours.

San Francisco's 28L. The left runway heading north usually used for landing. Hope I have the right designations for the runways.

I like coming in over water from the south after passing San Jose, seeing at the base of S.F Bay the various brilliant colors of the water ponds. Then continuing over water seeing the San Mateo hills off to the west and all the lights and businesses off of 101. Finally, at the very last second, the runway appears out of the bay just as you're touching down.

San Francisco 01L. (Runway headed east)

Take off going east taking sharp left turn to go north to go over San Francisco with a fantastic view of the bridges, twin towers and all the other sites in proceeding to continue to bank to head south to LAX.

The "A" window seat is the ticket landing and taking off.

17R at GFK. I am a little partial but it is where I started my flight training. I'll never forget doing power off 180s and seeing a DL connection jet sitting there waiting to take off. The pilot clicked the radio and said "Nice landing kid". I thought I was the best pilot in the world at that point.

Hi!

One of my favourites is Kristiansand in the South of Norway. I've mainly been to Oslo Torp but Kristiansand is very similar. Not only are many of the approaches in Norway very beautiful but I really like the way the runways are painted in Norway with yellow lines and lettering. They look very different from any other airports in the World.

Many thanks,

Always liked Runway 4R at Chicago Midway. Come in low and slow over residential neighborhoods, almost skimming rooftops, thunk the plane down, hammer the brakes 'cuz you have maybe 5,000ft left to stop, pull off the runway right up to the gate. Always an adventure at MDW.

My favourite is on the beautiful island of Tioman (TOD). A great place to unwind for a few days.

The approach on a Berjaya (J8) DHC-7 is certainly entertaining. Since there is a rather large hill at the end of the runway, takeoff is in the opposite direction to landing.

My 2 favorites would have to be runway 8 at BUR and runway 1 at JAC. They are both very short and require aircraft (particularly bigger aircraft) to land close oto the runway threshold and use reverse thrust. I like the way that the gate are is directly adjacent to the runway at BUR. At JAC, landings are very firm because the pilots have very little room to stop. I have flown on an A319 into JAC and MD88s and a CRJ into BUR, and always wonder how the 757s I see at those gates managed to stop on those short runways (thinking that my own experience was already exciting enough).

Landing at FLL after the construction is done on the new runway would be pretty neat...

My username is my favorite. You can see my house 1000' right of centerline 45 seconds before landing.

I believe that even L1011's used those runways at BUR as Lockheed had some operations there years ago. One Southwest B737 flight didn't stop one time and crashed through the barricades and went right into a gas station across the street. No fatalities, as I recall, except maybe for the pilots' jobs.

There are a lot of great runways out there I like, such as SBH or TGU.

The best runway I have flown into and out of would have to be DCA runway 19/1 the world famous river approach. Have dome that landing many times and it never gets old. Takeoff from runway 1 is a good one too.

At MIA I am not a huge fan of the approaches from the west but I also enjoy runway 9/27 it gets you the closet to downtown when taking off of 9 or landing on 27 a great view and a nice entrance for the visitors of Miami.

My repertoire of airports isn't particularly big, but I do enjoy taking off from 34R/16L at SYD in an A330, massive power followed by a sharp bank a couple of seconds after you leave the ground with great views of the water/city...

I have a few favourites, but one of the more recent highlights was flying into SDU a few weeks ago. The approach to 02R there was one of the most spectacular approaches I have had.

Both runways at JNU are great, but the approach to 8 is usually a little more exciting. Usually you don't get out of the last turn and wings level until you're over the runway. Great views from the left side of the plane too! Here's a couple videos, from inside:

Manston (EGMH) RWY 10/28. Dimensions are 2748m x 61m, so it's so wide that we always joke about how a pilot can easily land a Cessna 152 sideways when there's enough wind from 190

Norderney (EDWY) RWY 09/27 is the opposite. It is just 20m wide, I actually had to make a crosswind landing at that field and it was fun but challenging!

Yes they were both fired.

Note the gas prices (March 2000). The gas station was subsequently closed and demolished for safety reasons.

Reef Runway (26L/8R). I'll never forget taking off there in August 2008 in a Hawaiian B717 and seeing a 767 marked "CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN". I didn't believe my eyes, that was (then) candidate Obama's plane!!
Now more than ever, moving forward with the new American.
