No Row 13 On United

Fri Jul 13, 2012 3:55 pm

Hello all. I am trying to book a flight from MYR-EWR-MYR on UA on a Q400 and I noticed on seatguru that there is no row 13. It just goes from row 12 to row 14. I understand why they do this and I woudl be hard-pressed to sit in tat row, but my question is,

1. Do they do this on all of their planes?
2. Do other airlines do this?

Thanks

Lots of airlines do it, and lots dont!

A look at seatguru indicates that some planes do have it, perhaps they are ex CO or it just depends on configuration.

Interesting. SeatGuru doesn't list a reason for skipping row 13 on the Q400, but I'm sure it's to alleviate superstitious fears. Many hotels don't have a 13th floor for this reason. I know my airline's Dash 8-300's do have a row 13, and I've never heard any gripes on THAT particular subject. We get plenty of other aircraft-related quips though
Every flight counts.

Purposely or not, I do find it interesting that airlines eliminate row 13. However it's not only airlines, most buildings go from floor 12 to 14, most sports players avoid number 13 and so on... It's quite interesting from a sociological standpoint.

I avoid it as much as possible. I am the most superstitious person ever and if I ever had to fly on a plane with a MSN or Registration # ending in -13 I honestly would probably be pretty uneasy.

Dan Brown's book suggests that this has something to do with the Knights Templar's Paris establishment being unceremoniously dismantled by the King of France on Friday the 13th. Experts however believe that these are recently popularized correlations and there is no strong evidence that the 13 superstition has anything really to do with the Knights Templar.

This also occurs with undesirable flight numbers. At Delta, the following flight numbers were not to be used:
13
191 (Delta crash)
666
911
1313
5191 (Comair crash)

In the past, any use of 13 (1300-1399) was not used, and perhaps xx13 as well (not sure about this part).

sUA (ie Prior Merger United) aircraft adopted the sCO seating charts for all domestic planes (ie airbus and 757's). That meant common numbering for exit rows and the removal of some row numbers. This was done about a year ago in the effort to help have uniformity across the fleet. It (in theory) was to help ensure that if a plane swap happened it would be easier to protect those customers in those consistent seats exit row to exit row, etc

Most airlines follow the retirement of numbers after significant events. I think it was late last year that UA loaded flights with a number from a significant event (I think it was a 9/11 flight number) and that was meet with outrage here and other forums.
UA called it a mistake and renumbered the flights. UA has a shortage of flight numbers given all the flights they run but even still they hold to this strategy.

I remember looking at Seatguru years ago, before the merger, and noticing two different CRJ configurations listed under United. As far as I could tell the only difference was that one had a row 13 and the other didn't. I suspect it depends on the regional airline that's actually operating the flight.

United also has a ship N666UA, which in 2001 loss power on a flight OGG-LAX they were able to restart and land to KOA. I believe this was on climb out.

In the past UA never used 13xx flight numbers, but you could check the flight status of those in the system as they were used for training. Not sure what is done since 3/3 and the transition to SHARES.

Many UA aircraft skip over several rows since the exit row is always row 20. Some people are afraid of row 13 and few care that it is missing so they eliminate it so they do not have to worry about having trouble selling it. Many Asians have a superstition against the number 4 so we might start to see that row disappear in the future.

BD do not have a row 13. However the interiors of their aircraft are being gradually switched to the BA style. BA do have a row 13. So I assume all former BD aircraft soon will also soon have a row 13.

This is SO funny because no matter how hard you try, you just CAN'T eliminate row 13, because row 14 will be the actual row 13 if you skip the numbering. So what is the whole point.
But on a related note, have you noticed how sometimes dozens of numbers are skipped and your row numbers are all over the place? I flew on China Eastern recently and my boarding pass read 61L so I expected an A380 at least, but it was just an A330 with tons of row numbers skipped. But on seatguru they don't show it like this. What gives?

Sign me up for Black Cat Airlines Flight #1313 on a 313, seat 13A today, Friday the 13th.

It's just stupid... BTW, Lufthansa and Alitalia also skip row 17!

It all has to do with former-CO's dumb-bum seat numbering. They apparently wanted ALL of their aircraft to have the same exit row numbers, 20 and 21 (no clue why) and UA picked up the system. They renumbered the seats on all of their A320 and 757 (and other?) aircraft. They also eliminated row 13 for reasons explained in earlier posts.

Some UAexpress CRJ-700s have a row 13. I booked my step mom into 13A on SLC-ORD the other day.

Actually it's quite simple and fairly ingenious. It allows last minute aircraft swaps with minimal need for issuing new seat assignments. It doesn't matter whether it is a 735 or 752 - they have the same overawing exits meaning that 20-35 are pretty much guaranteed a seat regardless of what turns up. That means that only those in the last few rows in front of the wing and the very back of the plane need to be reseated in the case of a down gauge

Perhaps it may be simple but I'd say it's hardly "ingenious."

IMO, there is just something weird about seatnumbering looking like this:

9
10
11
12
14
20
21
22

etc...

speaking of skipping row #s

Good example: AA's M80 row # sequencing in first starts at 3
(no row 1 & 2)

Interestingly, CO was one of the only major U.S. carriers that skipped row 13 while UA aircraft had a row numbered 13. I was curious how this was going to be handled following the merger.

It's very rare to find a row numbered 13 on European carriers, except those based in the UK where they seem slightly less superstitious. BA has row 13 but I don't think VS does.

Haha, I found out when looking up UA seatmaps in mid-2011 that the seat numbers appeared to be all out of order.    (when in fact it was just UA changing to CO's seat numbering)

Isn't row 14 actually row 13.....then why bother skipping the latter......
