Similar Service Between BA And AA

Tue Jul 17, 2012 2:33 am

Hello Everyone,

I made a previous post about taking a trip from JFK to LHR (http://www.airliners.net/aviation-forums/aviation_polls/read.main/235497/). Most people were saying BA service would be a lot better than AA but I have to disagree.

I booked BA 744 from JFK to LHR and AA 772 from LHR to JFK. My first disappointment with BA was when they switched out the 744 for a 772. Then during meal time they made us put our seat backs up so people can eat. Half way through our flight the flight attendants made us close all the window shades on the plane because they said its going to get really bright. I found BA to be okay but a little bit on the annoying side.
Coming back AA had an 80 minute delay due to the the weather but we didn't care we just sat there watching movies. Service on AA was good and they gave us an extra meal probably because the flight back is an hour longer. I would book BA again if I can get the 747, but I would definitely flight with AA again because I thought the service was good.

Unfortunately there's nothing you can do about an aircraft swap.

Regarding the seat backs and shades, this is to make the flight more comfortable for everyone. You aren't the only one who paid for the flight. Airlines seats are tight enough. Is it so hard to give the person behind you a little more room to eat for half an hour? And the shades are put down so that people can try to get a good night sleep.

It's your choice who you find a better airline, but I don't think you were asked to do anything strange.
If it ain't Dutch, it ain't much.

It wasn't that it was strange but I have never taken a foreign carrier besides Air Jamaica and I was just stunned by the difference. No US carrier does that, but its cool to take different carriers and see how they run.

Another issue I have seen is how overwhelming the people on this site beat down on US airlines while praising foreign ones. I had to see for myself.

I don't see how any of that is annoying either... in fact, I'm more annoyed by unnecessary light on a night flight than I am by having to put my shade down. The former keeps me from sleeping, the latter is easily remedied by holding a blanket over my head (and thus the window) when I want to look outside.

A majority of the users on this site is from the US, so they talk about the airlines they fly on. You get similar love/hate stories in different countries and languages.
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

A LOT of airlines ak you to put your seat forward during meals, and close the window shade on overnight flights. The seat and meal thing beacuse it's pretty hard to a) eat reclined & b) people to eat with the seat in front in their face. If you fall asleep on a summer time Eastbound transatlantic flight with the window open, ropugly half way through the flight the sun is going to be buring through the cabin. If you shut it after take off, then there is no danger of you falling asleep with it open. Both standard practise. Maybe next time you should fly to the UK on AA, then back to the States on BA? Short overnight flights and then daytime flights both have very different service attitudes/styles.

This is pretty standard on longhaul flights. The reason why they ask you to put your seat up right while meals are served is so that the person behind you gets enough space during the meal. Closing window shades is also pretty standard on longhaul flights.

When I've flown over the pond Eastbound with UA they insisted that all the window shades were closed. As said by others its standard practice on overnights. As to the disappointment of a 772 instead of a 744 why ? The 772 is probably a little quieter, and it loads and unloads faster due to having less seats.

Thank everyone for the input. I fly westbound red eyes all the time across American and no carrier makes us close the shades.

It was a disappointment but I understand its a business. The last 747 I took was a TWA 741. I guess I will get it next time.
