Note: July 19 is an important day in United's DC-10 history. 23 years ago, on July 19, a United DC-10 experienced major problem inflight and declared an emergency landing. The DC-10 crash landed and broke up. Most passengers survived the crash landing.
Have I flown on United DC-10? Yes, once, in late summer of 1989. The route was ORD-SFO. The flight was a good experience for me.

United flight 238, Denver Stapleton International Airport (DEN) to Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW); and
United flight 86, Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) to Greater Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT).
At Detroit, I had to deplane and check in again for the second flight, although it was the same aircraft and crew operating both flights, DEN-DTW and DTW-PIT.
My first trip on a widebody was on a UA DC-10, ORD-MCO-ORD in February of 1998. We were parked next to the DC-10 that flew the Denver Broncos after they won the Super Bowl a few days earlier on the ORD-MCO leg. It had to have been the smoothest flight I've ever taken. I got to sit in the cockpit and talk with the first officer after landing at MCO. The picture of me sitting in the left seat is sitting on the mantle at my parent's house.
I flew just once, sometime n 1995 or 1996 from ORD-CLE. It's amazing to think I had that chance then (when I was still very young), when I was older and remembered my flights better, all my CLE-CHI flights became 737 or E145.
What a great question! Even though I flew DC-10's many times, most were on Northwest Airlines. My only flight on a UA DC-10 was on August 17, 1992 from DTW to ORD. I specifically remember the flight, because I found a fat, full wallet in the seat pocket, and turned it in to the flight attendant. I didn't realize to appreciate at the time flying a wide body on a short domestic hop like DTW to ORD. For what it's worth, I did fly Continental DC-10's on LAX-EWR, EWR-DEN and BOS-DEN in the post-People Express years of 1986 and 1987. Post-merger, could we count those as UA DC-10 flights?
YVR-SEA - first service of the morning IIRC (I had taken the Greyhound through the night from Vernon BC to catch that flight), in March 1996 - there was coffee and juice on offer for the short sector and the load-factor must have been 30% or so as I don't recall many other passengers nearby at all, which was a good thing as I was traveling sub-load!
It was the same livery as pictured above - and the cabin dividers were the famous multi-coloured, striped, deep-pile carpet: must've weighed a tonne!

Yes. About 1997 or 1998 from CLE-ORD. Aunt was a flight attendant. Got us along with my sister into first class (it was near empty). Being 7 or 8 years old I remember being pinned to my seat on takeoff. That's when my love of aviation began...
Yes....way back on Aug 22, 1978 between DEN and ORD enroute back to BDL. (The flight from ORD to BDL was a DC-8-61). The week before when we went out too Denver was my first ever plane trip. Coming home, I was amazed at how big the UA DC-10 was. During the flight there was a cartoon short subject "The Puppy Who Wanted a Boy"..followed by "ABC Wide World of Sports" playing on the screens at the front of the cabin sections. Impressive for an 8 year old. I am not sure of the flight number...would be curious to find out.
