UA956 EWR-GVA Diverted To BOS 7/31

Wed Aug 01, 2012 1:22 am

UA956 EWR-GVA turned around just before crossing the pond due to a suspicious package onboard - intercepted by F-15s SLAM31 and 32, just landed at BOS. Aircraft didn't dump fuel and landed overweight, B763 with 168 onboard.

According to ABC news, a Flight Attendent found a camera in a seat back pocket and could not locate the owner.

Jesus. A camera in a seatback? This is getting ridiculous. Clean your planes better.

Quoting jpetekyxmd80 (Reply 2):

I agree. Doesn't the inbound land about two or three HOURS before departure? I mean I know that's not a HUGE turnaround time for a 763, but come on! It's enough time to give the cabin a quick onceover.

Granted, I don't know the SOP for turning around a plane so I can't really comment, but it does seem that they shouldn't have noticed it.

What a mess. Crew went illegal which is why flight ended up cancelling.

Extra section BOS-GVA leaving at 1800 on 08/01.

It seems there is a fine line these days from 'better safe than sorry' and having the slightest modicum of common sense!

This whole thing makes absolutely no sense to me. They didn't even divert to the nearest airport, which you'd think would be the priority upon the realization of their worst fears.

I'm a big proponent of aviation security, really, but 2 words come to mind here: unconscionably. stupid.

I left an iPod and Bose headset on a UA flight a few weeks ago. Too bad they didn't divert the outbound flight so maybe I could have had them returned to me.

From Transport Canada daily occurrence reports. It was 80 miles SW of Sydney, Nova Scotia (YQY) when it turned around.

UAL956, Boeing 767-300, enroute from Newark (KEWR) to Geneva (LSGG), declared an emergency due to a "suspect item on board". The flight requested clearance direct to Boston (KBOS). The aircraft was given clearance to turn, descend to 32,000 ft. direct to Boston. The aircraft requested to be parked away from everything else. Information was coordinated with the Boston Area D supervisor. During the return to US airspace multiple aircraft were turned to stay at least five miles from UAL956. UAL956 exited Moncton airspace at 00:39Z.
