Ever Had A Short Flight Between 2 Long Flights?

Fri Aug 03, 2012 9:34 pm

I booked a flight recently and I realized that in the almost 1000 flights in my life, I never had an itinerary like this one: A long, 9 hour flight, then a short 1 hour flight to connect to another long, almost 11 hour flight. In all the multi segment flights I've done in my life, it was always long flight(s) followed or preceded by short flights, but never a short flight sandwiched between two very long flights.

Im my case, I'm flying from Miami to Bangkok on a UA mileage award, and the way it came up was transatlantic MIA-DUS on Lufthansa, then a short DUS-FRA hop on LH, then FRA-BKK on Thai's new A380.

I suspect that this is a typical phenomenon of a mileage award that I never would have gotten if I had booked a regular ticket for money.

Have you ever had an itinerary like this?

Back in April I flew Keflavik-Toronto (6hrs) to connect to Toronto-Houston (2.5hrs) continuing to Lima (6.5hrs). Not as extreme as 9hrs - 1hrs - 11hrs though! I also had DXB-CDG-LHR-KEF on EK/AF/FI which was 8hrs-0.5hrs-3hrs.

Another example I have, also not so extreme as yours, is when I flew KEF-BOS (5.5hrs) to connect to BOS-JFK (0.5hrs) and on to Sarasota (3hrs). As I said, not so extreme, but the difference is still big when looked at in context.

YYZ-LHR on BA - 7h
LHR-HEL on AY - 3h
HEL-ICN on AY - 9h

A friend of mine just did HKG - MUC followed by MUC - FRA and then FRA - BOG. It was on a group ticket, so I imagine it was a cheaper option than HKG-FRA-BOG.

Cheers

Don't know if it counts completely.

PER-HKT (6.5H) HKT-BKK (50m) BKK-OSL (11.5h)

So, that is long, short, long. However, PER-HKT-BKK was really one flight with a stop in HKT. But, still, it was long, short, long, with security controls, and airport waits at each stop.

Hi Soren,

I did a similar thing recently when returning from the DC-8 trip in California.

SFO-MUC // LH A346
MUC-TXL // AB B73G
TXL-AUH // AB A332

This was only because UA to FRA & LHR were full, as ever, and I was able to book ZED e-tickets on AB to get me home from MUC!

Keep in mind that you will need to enter Schengen, in case you need a visa you will be denied boarding.

Not as extreme as some of the routings above, but I did LAS-YYZ-YUL-BRU a few days ago...

Wow, I looked up that flight wondering who did it, and it's Virgin Australia, on a 737-800 - 6h48m.. With the exception of Privatair's business setup that's surely gotta be one of the longest 738 journeys?!

No, I was on Thai Airways on an A330-300. 2 days a week they fly to BKK via HKT from PER. Back then, they did it more often (think 4 times a week, but unsure).

So, thankfully, TG A330 is quite a comfortable plane, in contrast to a 737-800.

Back in college, I wanted to get back to Namibia to see some friends on the cheap. The best I could find was ORD-MUC-FRA-WDH. That middle (short) flight is kind of a tease - you think you're done after an overnight flight and a short hop, and then...another overnight flight. I didn't enjoy it too much.

I've done it occasionally, but it's rarely entirely voluntary. The latest example was YUL-BRU-ZRH-NBO because the BRU-NBO flight I was scheduled on was so severely delayed that an extra hop to ZRH was more than justified.

Hey there Soren.

Interesting premise. And yup, I have one coming up. In December, I am flying from Rome to Paris. For reasons best kept to myself, I am flying:

FCO-NRT AZ 777-200 11h
NRT-ICN KE 747-400 1h30
ICN-CDG KE 747-400 11h

That's with 90 minutes each at NRT and ICN. Will be tiring but very awesome. Let's see how I get on.

Btw MH until recently flew to S America with a pattern like the one you describe, KUL-JNB-CPT-GRU. I think if one wasn't a keen enthusiast, the JNB-CPT sector would have been completely maddening. And redundant, can't people get their own domestic flights while the rest of us have an ocean to cross? Well the route doesn't exist anymore anyway.
