MXP-JFK-YUL Baggage Transfer And Connection Time

Sat Aug 11, 2012 12:48 pm

A friend of mine will be flying MXP-JFK-YUL next month, both segments with AA, same PNR.

He asked me a couple of questions. Of course he'll also call AA to ask, but I thought you may have an answer, too:

- will the bags be transferred automatically at JFK, or will he have to collect them and re-check them after customs, just like you do when connecting to a domestic flight after arriving internationally?

- are 2:20 hours enough to connect in JFK? I don't know what terminal he will arrive at, nor where he will depart from. In my opinion the big variable is immigration: if a lot of wide-bodies arrive at the same time, it could be a bit tight. What do you think?

Thank you

If he's flying AA from MXP and transferring into American Eagle to YUL, then it's going to be Terminal 8. I can't answer all of your questions but I can tell you that T8 is one of the better terminals to travel through at JFK. (Along with T5) Well basically, any terminal but T2/T3...although T4 has been really chaotic as of late due to construction.

Yes he will need to clear US immigration and claim and recheck his luggage as if it was a domestic flight.

Its all in the same terminal so that certainly helps. I think it should be fine.

For reference the AA minimum international-international connection time published is 1:15 at JFK.

It is mandatory to clear immigration at first point of US entry (JFK), collect bags, take them through customs, and recheck them. While I haven't done this with AA specifically, I can only tell that other US carriers usually provide clear signage at their hub airports and that conveniently located connecting flight drop off check in counters are available. Then you need to reclear security.

You receive both boarding passes in ZRH.

Again, I can't tell specifically for AA and JFK, but over 2 hours will be generally more than fine if there is no delay in the first sector. Thousands of people do these connections everyday, your friend will be fine.
