UA: HKG-SFO VS HKG-EWR VS HKG-ORD

Mon Aug 13, 2012 3:17 am

Which is the busiest out of all 3? I mean in terms of total number of passengers. Does anyone have the figures?

I bet:

1) HKG-ORD

2) HKG-SFO

3) HKG-EWR

My 2 cents

Will HKG-EWR go B 747-400?

it certainly isn't EWR, as the 744 seats more than 100 pax more than the CO 772

somewhat unlikely ... those 744s would struggle on EWR-HKG ... if UA really needs more capacity on that route (and be competitive with CX), making it 10x or 14x weekly 772 is more likely

I wonder if UA would do something bold by using the 787 to launch IAD-HKG or re-open LAX-HKG

I hope UA opens IAH-HKG. I think the demand is here in houston.

True, the large viet community in IAH could definitely benefit from 1 stop IAH-HKG-SGN service (although I'd definitely pick ANA over UA if the price is not ridiculously out of range)

Doubtful...there is more demand from PVG or PEK from IAH.

But HKG is a very big/important market

So which one is busier? HKG-SFO or HKG-ORD?

Not as much. IAH isn't even the largest local market to HKG in Texas.

The real demand for Houston-China service is to either PVG or PEK.
It is what it is...

UA should restart HKG-SEA/LAX etc once they get the B787

With what? They have no planes that can fly that far, and if they can't make LAX work - they sure as hell can't make IAH work.

Why don't you share with us the daily demand IAH to HKG?

Been rumored before. Would be a pleasant surprise nontheless.

They don't have the range. UA tried flying them on JFK-HKG briefly in 2000 or 2001, with heavy load restrictions. CX only started flying non-stop with the A340-600, also with load restricitons, then switched to the 777-300ER. With the 747-400 they always had to make the stopover in YVR.

San Francisco is probably the biggest since they use a 744 and California has huge trade with Hong Kong.

They also use daily 744 for ORD. The argument goes both ways - SFO has larger O&D, plus premium LAX passengers preferring LAX-SFO-HKG instead of LAX-NRT-HKG after the downgrade to 738, but ORD has more connectivity.

But I'd venture to guess SFO, since that's the harder one to get award seats.

For the last 12 months:

1. SFO-HKG - Most Traffic, base for other comparisons below.

2. ORD-HKG -5%

3. EWR-HKG -27%

According to wikipedia

SFO-HKG 901,765 passengers in 2010.
EWR-HKG didn't even make the top 10 list so less than 250,00 passengers per year.
ORD-HKG didn't make the top 10 list either so less than 250,00 per year

I think you may have posted the total pax count on the 3 airlines (UA + SQ + CX) on the route, whereas the OP was asking just about the UA component. Otherwise each of UA's daily 744 flights carry 2471 pax!

Very simple -- just dig up DOT stats

2011 UA enplanement totals (round-trip)

HKG-SFO - 237,124
HKG-ORD - 218,302
HKG-EWR - 169,857
HKG-GUM - 22,914
From the desert to the sea, to all of Southern California
