Air Canada 851 Diverted To Edmonton

Would thunderstorms warrant such a dismal diversion? Seems like the aircraft is set to return to Calgary very shortly. Hmmm a 773 on such a short flight, I wonder if the 773 has ever been to YEG before?

yes, the 777-300 has been to YEG, in fact a few times. It operated YHZ-YWG-YEG as a roadshow presentation to employees shortly after delivery. I believe it also operated YVR-YEG-YYC-YVR to help clean up the mess after a crippling series of snowstorms in Vancouver a few years ago. Earlier this winter the 77W operated YYZ-YEG-YYZ as a consolidator flight when one narrowbody flight ended up cancelling.

From what I understand YYC had a ground stop briefly this afternoon due Thunderstorms.

I think the diversion was warranted, we had a real nasty thunderstorm roll through here right before this flight and the Frankfurt flight were due to arrive. Perhaps they were thinking the delay at YYC would have been longer? There were no arrivals for probably 30 minutes or so until they started landing again.

It also depends on where you are in the arrival stack. I have had ATC say to us that we are "number 12 in line, so once things open up, you can expect arrival 30 minutes later".

With information like that, you can make your game plan and go to your alternate even though you are not on "minimum fuel" .... knowing that even if things did open right away, you still wouldn't have fuel to hold.
Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!

I think we can probably assume as much seeing as it happened. People tend not to divert for no reason.

Both AC and CP flew 747s at one time on YYC-YEG, when YEG was a stop on some AC YYC-LHR and CP YYC-AMS flights.

Two photos of that one in the database.

AC also used the A340s on that route. AC850/851 would operate LHR-YYC-YEG-YYC-LHR.
