1st Airplane Flight And Aircraft Type

Fri Aug 17, 2012 8:58 pm

I am thinking back to my first flight on an airplane and trying to determine the type of aircraft it may have been. The flight was from MSP-LAX in July of 1979. The flight was a night flight that got into LAX around midnight. I know the aircraft seemed to have a 2-4-2 seating or something like that as I remember sleeping across a bunch of empty seats. I would not even remember the airline that I flew.
I do know this seems to be my first interest in airplanes. I remember grabbing the time table guide that the airport had in a magazine type rack all across the airport.

Would anyone have a clues to help me try and figure out the aircraft type and possibly even the airline. I know I can't be for certain, but I can try. And I am sure it may have been done already, but its always fun to hear those 1st time flying stories.

2-4-2 Seating could be an Airbus A300

It was a nonstop?

If so, offhand guess is a DC-10, probably Western or Northwest. I'll check on the times.

Yes it was a nonstop. I remember by brother and I just bothering the heck out of the flight attendants to know where we were flying over, but of course it was dark. I do remember going putt-putt golfing around 1am, so we had to of landing in the 10-midnight range.

But it was MSP-LAX....could it have been a DC 10?

Probably a DC-10...when they were first put into service they had a 2-4-2 configuration.
I know the voices in my head aren't real but sometimes their ideas are just awesome!!!

I am assuming on the seat, but i know it was 2 - ? - 2. The middle could have been 5 seats also. I keep thinking in my head it was a DC-something, but at the time I wasn't too concerned about the aircraft and more excited to be flying for the first time.

That's what my guess would be. I don't think any airline at the time operated A300s domestic

Thanks! that is great info. I know it wasn't a 747, so the flight must have been the DC10, though the time isn't as late, maybe a delay but i would not remember that.

By 1979 I think most, if not all, early 2-4-2 DC-10s had been converted to 2-5-2.

Not to throw a monkey wrench into the works, but would the DC-10 have been back in service by July of 79? I cant remember when the Chicago crash was that year, i just seem to recall that the entire DC-10 fleet was grounded by the FAA following that crash
Yes, I'd like to see airbus go under so Boeing can have their customers!

American 191 happened on May 25. The planes were grounded on June 6. According to DC-10 Grounding 1979 (by B741 Feb 26 2004 in Civil Aviation) it returned to service on July 13.
Good night, and keep watching the skis. Uh, skies.
