Service On AF 83 SFO-CDG Y Class

Sun Aug 19, 2012 1:16 am

Hi everybody,

In a few days I will be on AF 83 from SFO to CDG, connecting there to FRA. I have never flown AF long haul and wonder what to expect in economy on this flight. I know it's a B747 without any personal IFE but what is the service like, such as food, drink runs? Do they still serve champagne upon request?

Reviews of the AF long haul Y class seem to be mixed. I would love to hear from people who have recently flown US-CDG on this airline.

Thanks for your feedback!

AF Y is way above any US carrier. If you have the chance to have a seat on the upper deck, it's one of the best Y flying experience, as AF is one of the very rare airline to have Y UD. Bigger legroom, especially at the famous row 65.
PTV : well it depends. All AF 744 have PTV on the upper deck. On the lower deck, until a few weeks/months ago, only the 3 last frames received by AF had PTV at all seats. But AF is currently retrofitting their 744, and having PTV at all seats is part of the process. I believe 2 or 3 birds are now retrofitted (?), so you might be lucky !
A paper food and drink menu and an amenity kit will be distributed shortly after take-off. It includes headsets, eye shades, ear plugs and a towelette.
Food is usually good in Y (although better from CDG than from the US). Expect a well filled tray with appetizer, main course (choices between 2 and not necessarily the usual "chicken or pasta" of US airlines), cheese, dessert. Free wine and digestifs. Champagne (free) is served as an aperitif (as well as other drinks), but not during the meal service. Breakfast will be served approximately 90 min before landing in CDG (breakfast has became really crap now in Y).

They do not usually make drinks runs (except water) after the main meal service, but a self-service buffet is available in the galleys with soft drinks, water and snacks available.

Enjoy

6 (out of 7) have PTVs on the main deck also now. Only F-GEXB is not yet retrofitted.

Champagne is available also during the meal service and along the flight on demand.

And on the connecting flight, if it's a morning flight, you have the choice between croissants, pains au chocolats and some other rolls... Not too bad, however since FRA haven't moved to 2F yet, you will need to make quite a trek to terminal 2D, but I guess you are aware of that.

I would like to thank everybody for their feedback. I ended up in the main cabin on the lower deck as all aisle seats on the upper deck were already taken. The service on my flight SFO-CDG was excellent, with good food (I had the Hindu special meal) and PTVs at every seat. This was probably one of my best TATL flights ever. The service was also very good on the CDG-FRA leg. Only snacks, of course, as it was just a short, mid-day flight.

The transit at CDG from terminal 2E to 2D was somewhat of a hassle, though. The signage was not too bad - I did not get lost - but it was a looong walk!

I am looking forward top my return flight!

Cheers from Germany

I'm glad everything went well and that you enjoyed the flights. Maybe you'll have the upper deck for the return flight !

Yes, make sure to check in online or even preselect your seat to grab a nice seat on the upper deck if this is important for you
