Getting From Cuzco To La Paz – Recommendations?

Tue Aug 21, 2012 11:48 am

Dear all,

I am having difficulties in finding a good way of getting from Cuzco to La Paz, by land or air.

Surprisingly there are no scheduled flights between the two cities, most connections route through Lima which takes time and is rather expensive.

There is a way of getting to Juliaca with Star Peru (BAe 146-100!), however from there one has to find its own way it appears.

Is there a train running from Juliaca or nearby Puno?
I am sure there are plenty of buses, does anyone know:
• How often are these operating?
• What does it cost?
• How long does it take?
• Is there also a biz type of bus?
• Any chance to book these in advance?

Thanks for any recommendations.
Regards,
Loran

Amaszonas (www.amaszonas.com) will start direct flights between CUZ and LPB on Aug 27, so you might be lucky  . Note that flights will not be operating daily and are not exactly cheap (about 180 EUR for the o/w)

There are quite reliable and comfortable bus connections between La Paz and Cuzco. You could contact a Cuzco travel agent which should be able to make a reservation for your journey in advance. The journey should take about 12 hours and might cost about 30 EUR.

U flew this route in 1990 on Lloyd Aero Boliviano in a 727. Bolivia is very difficult to travel through by land. There are a lot of mountains and road conditions are often poor. I once took a bus from Cochabamba to Santa Cruz: 10 hours; I flew back: 45 minutes.

Good Luck and enjoy the altiplano.

Hi volvair and DesertAir, thanks very much for your recommondations. After some tweaking of my itinerary I found a way of fitting a flight on Amaszonas into my travel plans, which eventually saves me a whole day. It is quite surprising that there is so little demand for flights.

Loran

Not to hijack this thread, but I am looking for a cheap way to get from Chile to Bolivia... Sky Airlines offers only return flights, still cheaper then a one way on LAN SCL-LPB. Still I drag the idea of throwing away a half used ticket. Does any of the posters here have an idea?

Yikes... I would have thought that someone was bound to pick up that route immediately after AeroSur's demise. Shame it isn't so.

Anyway, if you haven't booked yet and have some time and money to spare, check out this combination:

first, the "Andean Explorer" train from Cusco to Puno:
https://www.perurail.com/en/routes_and_maps.php?des=2
which may be cancelled, forcing you to take an alternative bus - as happened to me several years ago

and then a hydrofoil tour on Lake Titicaca:
http://www.titicaca.com/Deutsch/deuInterPeru.html
I did the 2 days/1 night tour at the height of some bird flu/swine flu scare, as a result I was essentially alone and had my own personal guide - who spoke German, had a wealth of experience and did a great job.

Let me know if you'd like some more details.
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

Maybe SkyAirline might be able to sell you international oneways via their sales office if you can produce an onward itinerary out of the country? Have you tried to skype-call their international office in Santiago? Otherwise the bus is always an option from Arica or Iquique... other than Sky Airline's ARI-LPB I don't know any other "affordable" flights between Chile and Bolivia. Maybe booking a refundable fare and cancelling the return in Bolivia is cheaper than throwing away the return segment completely?
