If UA Upgraded Economy Plus, Would You Pay For It?

Sun Aug 26, 2012 5:16 am

Or for that matter, American or Delta too. By that I mean, if a US airline turned extra legroom into real Premium Economy, by not only adding legroom, but removing a seat as well. Would you pay for it on an international flight to have only 8 across on a 777 or 7 on an A330. How much would you pay to upgrade? Would you pay for 5 across on a 737/A320?

I may not be the tallest person, but I do not care nearly as much about my knees touching the seat in front of me, as I do about my shoulder touching the person next to me. (Or like my last redeye, their elbow digging into my ribs as they snore away!) Taller people may care more about the extra legroom, but you have to also appreciate more width as well, don't you?

I want fewer middle seats, and wider armrests, and I'm ready to pay the airline to get it, but I can't generally afford F. Why does no US airline see this as an opportunity. Long Haul flights, this seems to be making money on many international airlines, but in the US, a transcon is almost as long as a transatlantic, so it seems like it would be profitable on even more routes than other airlines. I would love to know if anyone else agrees.

I would pay for Premium Econ that was similar to BA or VS. It would need to have a bit more room, fewer seats per row, a footrest and slightly different service/food than econ.

I think there's a market for it but UA etc may be happy with sticking 100 +/- onto a ticket by providing a couple extra inches of legroom.

I'm booked in BA's World Traveler Plus on my next trip. If UA offered a *real* premium economy, I would cheerfully pay the difference. I won't pay it for the current product.

Absolutely. Every time I fly BA World Traveller Plus (most recently this past Tuesday PHL-LHR) I wonder why UA doesn't offer a similar product - especially on international routes. The extra leg room in Econ+ on UA is fine, but I don't think it's worth a substantial extra charge. World Traveller Plus is a different product altogether and well worth the extra money that BA charges for it.

More leg room and more shoulder room, isn't that called Business Class?
UA can't upgrade Y+ without upgrading F and J too or Y+ would completely cannibalize F and J.
At the same time, I don't think I've ever seen an empty Y+ seat on the few UA flights that I've been on so it seems that the financial incentive to do it is not there.

I've been on plenty of UA flights where the only empty seats in the Y cabin were in E+. On multiple flights the F/As have made an announcement saying you can't move to an E+ seat unless you had one assigned.
I want to live in an old and converted 727...

The E+ seats demand a $29 upgrade payment so it's now a revenue stream instead of just a perk for the road warriors.

No doubt UA/DL/AA did market research and the answer is NO!
You are 100 times more likely to catch a cold on a flight than an average person!

What it is more bizarre of E+ on UA, is that UA forgot to had some sort of priority boarding over regular E, that alone would help sell more E+ , I flew 4 segments on E+ a couple months ago and would be the first an last time I am doing it, the current product, if we call it that, is not worth a dime.

I am okay with 6 across on a 737 or A320, the pitch could improve a bit, but I have to agree that some sort of snack or just a full can of a refreshment would give some differentiation to regular E. priority boarding before regular E would not cost anything to UA, and make a huge difference, just add a few things and I would pay for it again.

Unless things have changed, I don't even think BA's World Traveller Plus gets priority boarding over regular economy.

On the A330, which is already 8 across in Economy. Economy Comfort does not have wider seats than economy class, it has more legroom and better recline (along with priority boarding and a few other perks).

DL Economy Comfort is 8 across on an A330, and 9 across on a 777, making it the exact same seat as a regular seat, just extra legroom. What I'm describing is one seat less in each row, therefore slightly wider.

Business class maybe few seats across, but with lieflat products, clubs, wine and all the other perks it is a huge step up. And a huge step up in price, that as much as I think it is worth the money, I cannot afford. What I want is a slightly larger Economy seat, with fewer neighbors. It can have the same food, etc if that's what the airlines want to do, but I am willing to pay a little bit more $100-300ish for a little more shoulder room, and I think other people would be willing to as well. On an international plane that has business and economy class, you have two extreme price points, and there really isn't any other product in the world with only two price points.

Most people don't drive SmartCars or Bentley's, they drive something in the middle. I am no exception, and I want to fly something in the middle, but it doesn't exist, at least where I live and need to fly.

About the only thing an airline could do to get me to buy their upgrades is lower the prices. UA tried to sell me an upgrade to E+ once on an SFO-BOS redeye for $79! And believe it or not, the exit rows were $89!!

I'm about 5'10", but you are definitely not getting me to pay around $80 for a couple more inches.
