Keep in mind that change may cost more than $250. Additional fare collection may also apply. But....to maximize your $250 investment, change your CLE
departure as well to reduce your overall trip travel time. You'll need to speak with a DL
agent to determine exactly what the "additional collection" will be. The $250 is a standard change fee for international itineraries before any additional monies for a fare difference is determined based on availability and fare classes still available to sell.
Now that said, I'd be less nervous/concerned about your AMS
connection. It is a great airport for connections/transit passengers and unless there was a significant delay on the DTW
flight segment, you should be able to easily connect to your BRE
flight within the standard connection times between DL
So I'd only consider spending $250+ if I can change my CLE
departure to a later time, get on an earlier DTW
and keep my current AMS
flight. The agent can grab any window seats and assign for you on the call, or you can display your booking after the call and assign the seats yourself. You can also re-check seats at the 24 hour OLCI time, and at a kiosk at the airport. Changing seats and getting a new boarding card/pass at the airport is free...unless you opt to upgrade to Economy Comfort.......which you can do using a credit card to pay. Y+ is usually $80 for DTW
So....spend $250+ for a change? Consider a same day change DTW
for $50+? Leave itinerary as it is and buy a 30day SkyClub pass for $90 to use roundtrip? Leave everything as is, walk around and sit for hours and spend zero?
It might be easy for ME to spend YOUR MONEY, but overall what is your money situation? Is any of that extra money well spent to enhance your trip? Could it be spent better in Germany with your family?
I think you'll be fine. DL
will take care of you in the worst case scenario. Relax and enjoy your first trip "cross the pond" because it in itself is exciting and part of the entire adventure and experience.
Best Wishes to You and Grandmother,
watch what you want. you may get it.
