US Airports With Exclusive Soda Contracts

Thu Sep 13, 2012 12:12 am

It's often debated on here whether airlines should serve Coke or Pepsi. But what about the airports?

I know from connecting through them that CLE, DTW, and DFW all have exclusive Pepsi contracts (though DFW has an exemption for McDonald's). On the other side, my home airport FWA is a strict Coke airport with the exception of one lone pre-security Pepsi vending machine.

Are there any other airports that have taken sides in the cola wars?

No idea really, but just guessing ATL is overwhelmingly Coke?

Yep, ATL is mostly Coke, with only a few exceptions. PHX is also primarily Coke.

Which makes me think: wouldn't it be funny if PepsiCo paid big bucks to make Pepsi the exclusive beverage at the home airport of Coke? Stranger things have happened.

Unless an airport has a contract with Pepsi, HMSHost always uses Coke, as the two (and parent company Autogrill) have a partnership. This is true even for HMSHost-run outposts of chains like Sbarro and Quiznos that have Pepsi contracts.

One of the rare exceptions at ATL is Villa Pizza in Concourse E, since I remember commenting about it last July when I connected at ATL and had pizza there.

There are a few places at DTW that have exemptions to the Pepsi rule, including Burger King and Chili's.

The SkyClubs also have Coke products.

The DTW McDonald's serves Pepsi, so I thought that Burger King and Chili's weren't exempt from the DTW Pepsi rule.

FWIW, the Chili's locations at DFW all serve Pepsi.

I don't think the DTW Pepsi deal covers airport lounges - just restaurants and shops.

There are a handful of restaurants that serve Pepsi but they are few, far, and in between. All the vending machines, the gift shops, food courts is Coke.

LOL. Coke would just outbid them!

Considering it}s a Delta SkyClub (the catering/beverages is provided by DL by way of GG) it would be Coke regardless of how the contract is written. Interestingly enough, the folks up north seem to like Coke products.

You know I was wondering about that - does the airline play trump because they obviously own and run the clubs, or does the facilities contract w/ Pepsi win because it covers everything at the airport? I ask because to my mind an airline club is actually part of the airport facility that the airline just happens lease for their own use, not much different from any restaurant, but at the same time, it IS a private section and not a public venue so I can't make heads or tails of which side wins.

Actually, DL uses LSG Sky Chefs at DTW. In terms of hubs, DL uses Gate Gourmet at ATL, LGA, MEM, and CVG, while DL uses LSG Sky Chefs at DTW, MSP, SLC, and JFK.
