UA & VS Separate Itineraries; Baggage Check-in?

Mon Sep 17, 2012 2:19 am

Hi Team,

In Nov, I am flying ORF-IAD on UA and IAD-LHR on VS. Problem is, these are 2 separate bookings, UA & VS are not partners and therefore my baggage cannot be checked thru to LHR at ORF airport. Most likely, I will have to check-in twice; once for ORF-IAD and once again for IAD-LHR.

Now, US Airways is a VS partner but my ORF-IAD trip is on UA. However, UA has a codeshare agreement with US.

Quite a few of my buddies have had a similar problem, but they suggested going to the airport a bit earlier on departure day and request the check-in agent to use the Interline system (??) and provide a seamless check-in of luggage to the final destination; LHR.

As mentioned before, UA has a codeshare agreement with US and VS is a partner airline with US and not UA. Will this be possible? Please let me know.

Interline agreements for baggage are different than codesharing or mileage partners. Most airlines do interline baggage (but not all) even for separate itineraries.

United does interline with Virgin Atlantic. You have to present your itinerary to the agent upon check in and they should be able to check it all the way to your final destination. Sometimes it does not work and the agent cannot do it, but they should be able to. You then need to present your bag id tag to Virgin Atlantic upon check in.

Where it will get confusing is with bag fees. If you have a VS tag from LHR all the way to ORF, you should not have to pay to check your bag in at IAD if you load it onto the transfer belt, but I cannot guarantee that.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!
