Fly MD11 Super Cheap! Ex DUB, Many Dates

Tue Sep 18, 2012 8:00 pm

I can't believe what I just booked. I needed a Europe to West Coast USA flight for next spring, so I shopped around a bit and got 500-600 EUR which is really good. Then I tried Dublin as point of departure because I have often found great fares out of DUB and it's really cheap to get into from anywhere in Europe, and amazingly I got a 430 EUR fare into SFO for lots of different dates beginning as early as November 2012 and well into June 2013.
I was really happy with this and almost booked it. Then I realized I actually need sort of a multi city, I need to fly into Montreal and fly out of San Francisco. OMG! I got 395 EUR which is an amazing fare, and I get to fly on an MD11!
Now I realize you can't rely on an aircraft type specified in the schedule half a year earlier, but hey I'll give it a shot!

So long story short, I'm flying DUB-AMS-YUL on Aer Lingus / KLM MD11, and back SFO-ATL-DUB on Delta, this is 10.000 miles of flying for 395 EUR. I tried several different dates over a span of many months and I always get similar fares.
Only you have to fly out of DUB, and apparently the flight back needs to be out of SFO.

So here's your chance to fly on an MD11 for cheap!

Thank you for the wonderful news!

I have only visited Dublin once and for only one night, so this sounds like a great opportunity to re-visit Dublin! The Irish are so friendly!!!!

Thank you again, and bon voyage,

So I just tried to booking this on Delta.com. I picked random dates in February (12th to 19th), and used the multi-city search function to search DUB-SFO-YUL-DUB, with SFO-YUL-DUB both on the 19th. Price was given in EUR, listed as a fare of 150.58 EUR, with taxes of 328.24 EUR, for a total of 478.82 EUR.

The final routing was DUB-CDG-SFO-ATL-YUL-AMS-DUB, with six flights operated by six carriers on six different types: CityJet AR8, AF 77E, Delta 752, ExpressJet CR9, KLM M11 and Aer Lingus A320. Sounds like the beginning of one crazy trip report.

USA flights out of Dublin and Shannon are often comparatively cheap because of the Irish tax system - which has left the country in great economic shape, I might add    They've so far never been cheap enough for me to warrant the stint up there. Even if you can fly Ryanair, which I don't, you will need to spend an extra 50-100 Euro for the flights to and from there, getting you to a total of €500 for a flight to the USA. That's anything than great.

I booked a flight from Paris to Martinique yesterday for €134 round trip and Air Canada offered BRU-YUL; EWR-YUL-HAM for €208. HAM-BRU on SN would have been €48 including one checked bag at the time.

I'm happy you put this post here and I'm not trying to put it down, I've just come across a lot better offers recently and had to unfortunately conclude that going through Ireland is never really worth the hassle.

P.S. Those ORY-FDF flights are still available, but have come to the attention of the airline. The etickets have been issued, but legally they have another 24 hours to cancel the contract of carriage.

Sir, don't worry, you're still the finder of cheap fares on this forum, I never claimed this offer to be the best travel deal ever in the world.

It's just that I actually NEED to fly to those places, and I'm dying to fly on an MD11 while doing this, as are many others on this board. The offers you post are awesome (in fact I've flown to SXM with the girlfriend thanks to your work), but they are mostly to some random places that make for a nice weekend or holiday trip.

But if people actually need to fly transatlantic, and want a wide selection of dates, and want to score an MD11 or two on the way, and all of this at a great fare, then they might find this useful.

Thats why I posted.

But Martinique for 143 is great too.

I have done one previous trip report -- a retro report of a 2001 trip to Ukraine that didn't have many pictures but told a good story. I have a Europe trip coming up next month that I may or may not do a report on. As for SFO-DUB... I'd have to convince my wife to let me go (probably have to take her with me ;] ). And I'd need to get to SFO, as there doesn't seem to be any similar deal on BZN-DUB.

I saw that Ukraine report of yours - amazing! I would really like to read a TR about a trip with 6 flights, all on different airlines/equipment.

As for the deal, as I'm not near 18 yet, I can't book it. In 3 years this would've been a different story though!

Cheers,

I'm sorry, but what exactly has the Irish tax system got to do with air fares? Apart from that fact that we dont charge ludicrous ADP rates that the UK does? (Along with the vast majority of Europe.....)

May I slightly deviate from the above topic?

Does anyone have a clue about KLM's MD-11 phase-out plan? I was shocked to hear the first aircraft has already left the fleet (PH-KCH).

Also, I was checking their schedules around the Caribbean for early next year and surprised to see that most or all MD-11 flights are replaced by A330 equipment. It still shows some of the usual MD-11 destinations, however significantly less.

I'd therefore be intested to know how many aircraft are leaving the fleet each year and what the schedule outlook is. Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Loran
