United Airlines Flight UA895 [Problems]

Sun Sep 30, 2012 4:38 pm

I would like to know why the flight UA895 from Chicago [ORD] Hong Kong [HKG] has so many problems, such as delays and cancellations. Someone working at United Airlines could explain something about this particular flight?. thanks.

By the way.The flight is delayed today.

The flight has cancelled twice since may 30th, All things considered that is pretty damn good. As for the delays, its an international flight... things happen like waiting for 40 to 60 plus connections that are arriving late. Since there is only 1 flight a day on that route, rebooking late connections is a bit more of an issue then holding the flight by 30 to 45 minutes. the 747-400 is also getting up there in age and things do break, so MX can be an issue as well.

Stuff happens.

And also, in case you haven't been aware of the troubles at United this summer, LOTS of flights are delayed lately.
Not as bad as what AA is dealing with, for sure. But after the systems integration on March 3, everything sort of fell apart, and it took a long time to get things smoothed out again. In fact, I'm not completely sure that they're "back to normal" even now.

My sister took that flight a few months back and it was delayed by four hours. She called me furious but I explained that no airline has a dozen spare 747-400s sitting around just waiting to be dispatched on a moment's notice. The flight is a bit unique also that you can't just swap it with another widebody aircraft such as a 763 to complete the flight.

I have to take this flight on Oct-20 Th and I really hope it will be on time, because I have to meet somebody inbound from Bangkok at the HKG airport arriving just ten minutes before my flight lands in there.

Very well put. I'd like to add that you also need legal reserve crews that CAN do the flight as well, which the time required to accomplish said task may outweigh the delay.

Also, remember that ORD-HKG is a VERY heavy aircraft at Take off. With how hot it has been this summer in ORD, they have been unable take off full weight given runway conditions. So, another reason to delay.

I know we on the CO side have delayed the EWR-HKG (UA117) flight till late afternoon for that VERY reason. It happens way more than people think. Just the .002% of the pax on those flights feel their world is over for a delay that helps keep them ON the flight, or even going at all... But, I digress! lol

Was going to mention the EWR-HKG flight, you see that one going out as late as 8p sometimes over the summer due to heat limiting T/O performance...

Why doesn't UA (CO) just schedule the EWR-HKG flight later in the day during the summer since it is so often delayed due to runway/performance issues out of EWR?

Because the scheduled departure of 15:30 means and arrival of about 19:00 in HKG, still time for connections (think UA 895 to SIN) to other destinations. Delaying the departure would severely limit the connections.

I've done UA 895 a few times over the past year. I couple of those times we had delays due to "solar flares". Once was an overnight at ORD and a departure the next morning, talk a bout a cluster____ at the departure gate at ORD... I felt bad for the gate agents dealing with the culture of rushing the boarding area plus the added issues of the second flight. I did some basic research and found teh solar flares were active on those dates, but other flights made it...oh well, better to be safe than sorry.

I wonder how 895's delay rate stacks up against other UA ultra-long hauls? In the past year I've experienced multi-hour delays on UA ORD-PEK and EWR-HKG. Is there anything particularly unique about this flight's delay history?

So what? How else are going to get there? Swim? Sail for several weeks? A 4 hr delay is nothing compared to the fact that it's on the other side of the world.
My posts/replies are strictly my opinion and not that of any company, organization, or Southwest Airlines.

It is, if it makes the duration of your trip 20 hours as oppose to 15 1/2! I've taken UA to NRT and PVG and they generally were on time, even though I saw on flightaware that cancellations and diversions happen This is part of airlines business as long as they do not forget about you in PVG and leave there for 3 days....
