United Hawaii Catering?

Sun Oct 07, 2012 5:47 pm

Why is United Airlines offering Buy on Board on all flights from the West Coast, Chicago and Newark to Hawaii but on the Houston to Hawaii market they are offering free Dinner/Lunch. The Newark - Hawaii flight is as long as 10 hours and no free food is provided but from Houston? Why?

HA offers complimentary meals in Y on it's mainland-hawaii flights, in addition to buy on board products in. DL offers complimentary meals in Y on it's Non-Stop ATL - HNL - ATL flights, all west coast-hawaii flights are buy onboard. AA & US offer buy onboard in Y on all of its mainland-hawaii flights.

DL recently ended complimentary meal service between ATL/HNL (again). HA is the only carrier offering complimentary meals between the mainland & Hawaii.

Why are complimentary meals no longer offered? Because several legacies dropped complimentary meal service and the rest followed suit. In contrast, when UA attempted to end complimentary on transatlantic service to/from IAD, nobody followed suit and the idea was quickly dropped. US also attempted to end compimentary beverage service and had the same result.

Just flew on HA it was great for domestic compared to others.

West bound - Y was offered boxed breakfast which was butter / jam sandwich, dry fruit snack and cookie. Complimentary Mai –Tai’s were offered with a snack service before landing.

East bound- hot chicken teriyaki dinner with salad, cookie, and complementary Wine was offered.

Both flights also had premium meals (BOB)

I think it has to deal with the nature of the markets and, (although I am making a guess here) and what type of fare is charged.

Of course, while cheap tickets to Europe are not impossible to come by, and much of the added costs to the base price of a ticket come from taxes and fees for cross-border flights, US to Hawaii flights can be filled at much lower fares and since they are domestic flights, customers can use their miles and elite status to obtain free flights and upgrades.

Hawaii flights are also full of leisure/price discretionary travelers, whereas Europe flights contain a much larger concentration of higher-yielding corporate/elite traffic which probably was what raised the stink.

Finally, I am sure that the TATL JV with LH also had something to do with it. Since UA and LH operate as one airline across the Atlantic, there has to be SOME form of product alignment. It would really be shameful for Lufthansa to see its JV partner charge for mediocre meals on 8hr+ flights.
