What Do You Think Of Skytrax Reviews?

Sun Oct 14, 2012 8:45 pm

Well my problem is in the headline, but what do you think about www.airlinequality.com and their reviews?
They clame they are trusted and controlled.

Then I read this review of SAS: "Singapore - Copenhagen. One of the worst flights ever. Who charges for booze on board an international flight. Crew were surly and unfriendly, aircraft old if functional, but the whole ambience was negative. Never again."

I am sure he did not had a pleasant flight, but first of all SAS does not fly to Singapore, secondly they serve free booze with the meals in economy.
A trustworthy review?

Well, I read a few weeks ago an airport was voted best at something by 12 million people. They actually found 12 million people to vote for an airport. Yeah right.

I have to look up what it was the 12 million people voted about. They have more of this gigantic surveys where millions of people vote for something. I don't believe it. The problem with reviews is that anyone can put anything on such website. I like tripadvisor more although it's not for airlines but they take a few days before your review is posted so they moderate what you're writing.

Skytrax makes its revenue off advertising and favorable reviews. If an airline pays to sponsor themselves on Skytrax , then they will be rewarded with fake reviews and/or have negative ones removed. Skytrax is a for profit website and with that .... there reviews cannot be trusted.

For frequent fliers .... Skytrax is a joke , they use Flyertalk etc for more unbiased reviews.

I posted several reviews, and they were all posted. Its strange that your reviews are ignored.

Some people tend to be overly anal when it comes to writing reviews. People complain of EVERYthing; and to some people giving out a short blanket can lead to the worst flights in the world.

Generally, I found the reviews consistant with the airline ranking mostly.

And I don't have to see al the voters for all the airlines, no, only qatar airways voters would be enough. They must count babies and people who have never seen a Qatar Airways aircraft in their lives.

No, my reviews were nothing like that, I am a seasoned traveller.. I wrote a positive review about a flight on SQ and one where I gave a PR flight a somewhat positive review. It was in-depth in that it was several paragraphs long, I detailed the entire experience from boarding to landing. I thought they were very rational and fair.

That is quite an unfair assumption on your part don't you think?

All I know is I posted some reviews, nothing particularly peculiar about them, they could look like the other reviews on the site.. but they weren't published. I thought through but couldn't think of anything wrong with them. That to me was a complete lost of credibility.

In contrast, on this site I once had a post deleted by a moderator. I was notified of the deletion and an explanation from that moderator was provided.

Skytrax = Joke

The organization's complete lack of transparency and for profit status makes anything they publish not worth the paper it is written on or the bandwith it uses up.

I dont work for Qatar Airways LOL! My username is the name of my country QATAR, which is not Qatar Airways. My reviews were mostly with others airlines such as EK or BA, AA.

Survey based research is dubious at best, and the Skytrax surveys are far from "best". Respondents represent an infinitessemally small sample of the total population flying, and it would be incorrect to assume that they are anything even approaching representative of the flying population as a whole. The site is unprofessionally put together, reviews are inconsistently published and the data presented without any validating analysis (confidence intervals etc) that would be expected of credible research.

It's worse than useless.

What's really amazing is that the media at large, and even airlines themselves, seem to give it credence - as if this were the aviation equivalent of TV show ratings (which are actually professionally conducted and statistically valid). Nothing could be further from the truth.

Skytrax offers two different products: reviews and ranking. The two are not the same. The reviews supposedly are user submitted . This means that they are highly subjective and often based on just one experience. Sometimes users will pan an airline for something that is completely outside the airline's control. Comments can range from someone complaining that the champagne was too warm or the taxi didn't turn up on time to how everything was perfect. I have seen posts by people claiming that the airline is racist simply because the choice of meal wasn't available. Go figure.

The opening post with the example of SAS - Singapore is quite amusing, given that Skytrax claim that they filter out posts for obvious discrepancies.

The ratings are not the result of user input.

Ratings are claimed to be conducted following a set criteria, covering everything from ground support, aircraft maintenance, catering, in-flight service and after-flight support. The full list is only available to airlines who subscribe. Some information is public, for example that no airline offering 10 across on a 777 will ever be awarded Five Stars. However, without seeing the complete set of criteria it is hard to judge.

Best is to take everything you read with a generous pinch of salt.

I know of one guy who posted 2-3 reviews and they were published but wit the star rating changed.

My all time favourite was a female pax stating that she would never travel with airline X again as the airport she flew into did not have a dedicated transfer facility......she had to clear immigration and go through departure security again...the horror! Yet Skytrax accepted this 1 start review as a review of the airline rather than the airport.

That's just as bad as blaming an airline for turbulence.
I've seen these kinds of irrational reviews at Yelp.com and Trip Advisor. I take these reviews with a grain of salt.

Keep in mind, the bad behaviors displayed at airport check-in and in-flight are the same people leaving reviews at Skytrax and other similar websites.
I can recall a few customers throwing a temper-tantrum at JFK threatening to sue United Airlines because of a major thunderstorm that hit the New York area and caused delays. The rain was pouring down like crazy and you could even see small waves rippling across the tarmac. I can recall one guy screaming; "What's wrong with you people?!?! Why is there a delay?" Meanwhile he is punching away with his stylus on his PalmPilot (this is going back a few years). It was embarrassing for a well-dressed businessman to act like a 3rd grader.

Skytrax IMHO is a complete joke, some of the passenger reveiw defy belief. I take any information they now produce with a pinch of salt and as for any airline claiming to be Skytrax airline of the year, I think anyone could get this if they paid enough $$$$$ for it.

I use to follow Skytrax for a while then I discovered a.net!

I submitted several reviews about AF & DL and they were all posted. However, I too wonder how some reviews make it onto the website. One review the writer slamed the airline because the parking fees were "horrendous" or once a guy complained about the FA "forcing" him to sit down just minutes before landing. All he wanted to do was stretch his legs after being seated for the entire 90 minute flight.

Haven't logged into the website in over a year.

Following some criticism of Skytrax procedures the British Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) announced this summer that it was carrying out an invesrigation:

Hopefully the ASA report will either confirm Skytrax's claims or put Skytrax to sleep for ever.

Generally I think most people tend to know or have a good idea of those airlines that are shall we say at the top end of the market, and those that are at the bottom and a lot of carriers come somewhere in the middle. You can have a bad flight if you're unlucky on say JAL or SIA just as you could probably have a good flight on PIA or Iberia (I've never heard anyone compliment IB yet).

If friends fly anywhere I'm always interested to hear who they flew on and what they thought, this is often a better gauge of opinion that some of these vote for me sites.

It would be an interesting forum to start whereby everyone on a.net could vote for their top 5 or 10 airlines that they have flown on, and then see what the result would be. It would have to be strictly comment free, just a list otherwise everyone starts questioning each others list and it would degenerate into chaos.

I fancy we'd see some interesting results.

Well thanks a lot for that. Over the last few years I've probably submitted 15-20 reviews to Skytrax and I've always tried to be fair and objective. All my reviews have been published without any change to the rating although the most recent one was edited in a way that made it completely incoherent and Skytrax have so far ignored my request to remove it.

We've all seen Skytrax reviews that are written by people who clearly haven't a clue about how anything to do with flying works but there are also plenty of reviews by regular and knowledgable flyers which are often very helpful. The trick, of course, is to distinguish between the two but I imagine that most a.netters wouldn't find that difficult.

The last time we debated this (about a year ago?) I was criticised for likening Skytrax to Trip Advisor but I stand by the comparison. There is a lot of mendacious rubbish on both sites but there is also plenty of useful material and any reasonably intelligent person should be able tell the difference.

Yeah, Skytrax is not at all the TripAdvisor of airlines, as it's often positioned to be. Here's what a travel poll said of Skytrax's relevance (or irrelevance) - http://bit.ly/SkytraxIsDead

Have I heard from them or any other answer? no.

If you read the EK reviews you would think they were a "2 star" airline. Honestly the average ranking for EK is about 2/10! At first I just presumed that I was very lucky in having uniformly positive experiences on my EK flights, now I figure that they SkyTrax isn't worth too much and I'll book on my own opinions, which afford EK 8/10.

Quoting Quokkas (Reply 13):

If that is true then I am horrified. That is clearly designed to discriminate against EK since until a few years ago they were the only airline with 10 abreast on the 777. I guess the check got lost in the mail

The statement by Skytrax can be found at http://www.airlinequality.com/StarRanking/ranking.htm

Quote:
"For example, we set a policy in 2009 that ruled out a 5-Star Airline ranking to an airline that opted for a 10 across seating configuration on their Boeing 777 aircraft" says Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax.

The full list of criteria is available only to management personnel of the airlines featured in the World Airline Star Ranking programme and will only be sent to an email address at participating airlines.
