Seeking UA Help: Personal IFE On Which Aircrafts?

Tue Oct 30, 2012 8:26 am

Hi,

I need your help from you United experts.

I need to travel to TPA with UA and I am completely lost with aircraft configurations. Some of them I don’t even find them on Seatguru…

I would love to travel in a config with 2 seats at the window (no 3-seater-bench) so I believe the 767 or a selected 777 with 2-5-2 Seating (do they still have them) would be best.
However for me it is extremely important to have a personal IFE, so I am not sure if all UA aircrafts offer these.

My options are the followings:

1 UA 118 K9 /FRA 1 EWR C 0845 1205 E0/767
UA1618 K9 /EWR C TPA 1410 1707 E0/752 8 14:22

2 UA 945 K9 /FRA 1 ORD 5 0805 1030 E0/777
UA 444 K9 /ORD 1 TPA 1411 1753 E0/320 6 15:48

3 UA 051 K9 /FRA 1 EWR B 1105 1425 E0/764
UA1637 K9 /EWR C TPA 1849 2201 E0/738 N 16:56

I would prefer via EWR as I believe it’s easier to navigate and I’ll get the better schedule and the 767. But does it has PTV?

Thanks very much for your help.

I see what you mean! The so called "Boeing 767" used on UA118 is a Hawaii/Pacific 764, and I'm actually shocked to learn that they are using them to FRA!

Your best bet is UA51. All but 1 of the International 764 (which you can differentiate from the HI frame used on UA118 by the larger J cabin) have been refurbished and include nose-to-tail AVOD. I think the last frame should be finished shortly anyway. You will know that you're on a refurbished aircraft because the J seats slant on the seat map, whereas they are just an orange square on the old interior aircraft.

By PTV I assume you mean AVOD (Audio Visual On Demand) since the entire UA long haul fleet have PTVs apart from the 747s, but on some types it is a loop system rather than an on demand system.

If you want a shorter travel time, I'd go with option 1 which has PTV on the FRA - EWR flight, and AVOD on the EWR - TPA flight. If you want AVOD on the FRA - EWR flight then go with Option 3. However on the EWR - TPA flight for option 3 it's hit or miss whether that flight will have DTV or not.

Thanks a lot. I took option 1. Even if it's not AVOD, it will do. And I will have better timings, better schedule, 2-4-2 seating. And I'll get a 757 as well. Didn't knew they had AVOD though

Option 3 is the way to go......the 738 has LiveTV. The others do not.

Only the 737 fleet has LiveTV.

Thanks, the thing is that I don't know US tv channels. So I wouldn't even be sure what to look   I believe for us Europeans a AVOD system is better   Out of curiousity however, would they charge for DirectTV? I remember flying UA from IAH to PTY on a ex CO aircraft and you had to swipe your credit card...

No worries. Look in the inflight magazine, it will have a short list of what's offered for LiveTV.

About $6.99 or so per segment.

Yep, you still have to.

As for me, when flying UA domestic, I make sure I'm on a 737 more than anything else.

Not all 738s have LiveTv, and he could very well end up on one of the IFEless 738s.

I flew ORD-FRA-ORD 777 and they always had IPE. Domestic 320 will not have IFE - overhead monitors, but the flight is abour 2 1/2 hrs.
