Non-rev To Iceland

Sun Nov 18, 2012 5:16 pm

Hi folks, this is my first post here, so hopefully I've got it right.

I'm looking to non-rev to Iceland in February and was wondering if I should try from BOS or JFK as those are the closest airports to me. It will be my first trip to Iceland so I don't know much about the flights to/from KEF.

Thanks

Icelandair has relatively good non-rev benefits for other airlines. Just stay away from SEA-KEF, DEN-KEF or MCO-KEF since those routes sometimes have weight restrictions with the 757.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Thanks Roseflyer, any info on the loads to KEF from BOS and JFK? I see from the Icelandair website that they use the 753 to JFK, not sure if that increases the chance of getting on or if it is going to mean more people and a full airplane.

When it gets close to departure date, call the airline reservations office. They won't tell you how many seats are available but they can and will tell you if its worth it to attempt to stand by for. I'd go for JFK for the 753 and better opportunities. More pax and more chances for missed connections from OALs or interline.

Are you travelling with a ZED or jumpseat?

Thanks mhkansan, I will be traveling with a ZED ticket. Probably an old-fashioned paper one! Gotta love how some of the young CSA's look at those when they haven't seen one before. Makes me smile every time.

Hi m1m2.

First rule: DON'T USE JFK. Full out of the door almost every day, and last weeks FI has needed to put an extra flight nearly every day even though the 753 is operating. Tried to get on KEF-JFK 3x times this year, only got on once.

BOS should be ok, generally there are a few seats open every day. I'm flying BOS-KEF in April (on a booked ticket though) and looking at availability it looks pretty open.

My advice would be though, if possible, use IAD. Nearly always open seats. Also, if YYZ is still operating in Feb (don't remember if it is) it should be pretty empty.

Agree, with Roseflyer, don't fly any of the 7hr+ flights. Especially not Orlando, avg load factor on that route is 99.87% (it's the actual number)! Orlando is already soldout throughout late-February - early-May right now!

If MSP is operating at the right dates it should also be a pretty good bet.

Not to nitpick, but Icelandair operates out of Sanford (SFB) not International (MCO). Changed in 2005.

Hope this helps!

Dulles is normally a very safe bet. My friends Mother just returned from KEF, and the IAD flighrs were the most open on the East Coast.

I don't think they are doing Dulles in February. I can't find any flights in the second week of February.

Dulles is year-round, 3-4x weekly. Just look at the 2012-13 winter timetable at icelandair.com.

Correction: Seems you're unlucky! FI does indeed terminate IAD-KEF mid-January until mid-March. Seems like February traffic to DC is low...

Because of this I would recommend to you to fly out of Boston. Much more likely to get aboard there than at Kennedy... Also, you could list on both BOS and JFK and then, a few days out, you could check the loads on both flights. After that you choose the better looking flight.

regards, Sveinn

Thanks for all the help folks. I'll definitely take this into consideration and have tickets for both BOS and JFK to KEF. I'm looking forward to seeing Iceland, I hear it's a very nice place to visit.

Sorry couldn't help regarding the non-rev Icelandair question. But just wanted to say "enjoy Iceland!". Just got back from a week-long trip there myself and it was one of the most extraordinary places I've ever been to on Earth. Can't wait to go back next year and experience even more, it's simply captivating.
