Flying Lesson Questions PPL/NPPL (Migraines)

Wed Nov 21, 2012 9:56 pm

I have never posted in this forum before so please be nice! And If this thread doesn't belong here please move it, I have put it here by personal judgement

Well I have been a sufferer of migraines for a matter of months (Since March 2012 roughly) and back in late August I went to Newtownards Airfield, Northern Ireland, to get information on obtaining a PPL and the costs and what's all involved etc All was good and we got home and I talked to my mum and we seemed as if we're already to go and start.

The next week we went back to the airport get some booklets and some extra info and as soon as I got out of the car at the airport I had a migraine attack, its one of the ones that has an early warning system which has a curved crack along the vision for about 10 minutes, but this blocks apart of my vision and then on the last minute or so it then grows out the way and at its peak it covers my right side of my vision around the edges of my eyes.

Afterwards it turns back to normal and then I start turning ill and basically gets a little nasty afterwards, I take 500mg of paracetamol and it usually kills a lot of the pain but doesn't stop the sickness afterwards. Overall the ordeal lasts about 5-6 hours and I used to have them every other week, but I have not had any for 2 months, and the only thing I have changed is not using any devices in the dark i.e. Television and iPod

And I have done a lot of research on this type of migraine and it turns out I can never be an airline pilot because of this,   And to add, on my medical records it shows I have only had one migraine and that was in June last year, so other than that that's all the evidence I have

If you have managed to stick it this far I have the following questions:

1. Can I still have a PPL license with the type of head ache I get or type of medication?
2. What are the requirements to the migraines with impaired vision with the CAA
3. What are the differences between an NPPL and a PPL, i.e. exams, flying distance, price?
4. Is it better to wait longer with no migraines or start planning on flying lessons?
5. Am I going to struggle to find a use for a license in the future, i.e. flight Instructor, cargo pilot?

More Info at this link, this person describes it to the bare minimum...
And I know there is a lot of info in it, but just what I need is what I have typed ion the thread itself
