TG: Bangkok To Seoul Flights

Thu Nov 22, 2012 1:29 pm

I will fly BKK-ICN with TG soon and have seen that somedays there are up to 5 flights, one continuing to LAX. Two direct flights and two routing via TPE and HKG.

BKK 0715 ICN 1440 TG692 773 continuing to LAX
BKK 0725 ICN 1615 TG634 333 via TPE
BKK 1030 ICN 2005 TG628 772 via HKG
BKK 2310 ICN 0635 TG658 773
BKK 2330 ICN 0655 TG656 772

I just wondered why only on this route TG is making 2 flights with stops and not serving ICN direct.

And why are there to big flights with Triple 7 outbound nearly at the same time in the evening.
I find that quite strange. Is there a special reason for that?!

Probably because the 5th freedom traffic makes the flight more profitable than flying nonstop, and if passengers want to stop at either TPE or HKG en route to ICN, they can carry the passenger all the way rather than having to interline and lose much of the revenue. CX also operates a 5th freedom flight HKG-TPE-ICN. CX also has 4 other 5th freedom flights between HKG and NRT/KIX/NGO/FUK with a stop at TPE. Those flights have been operating for years so the 5th freedom traffic must be profitable.

Probably more demand than one aircraft can accommodate. Looking at the schedule it appears that the 772 operates the 5th freedom flight ICN-HKG-BKK the following morning.

When South Korea shifted recognition of China from Taipei to Beijing, all Taiwanese and Korean airlines were banned from operating flights between Taiwan and South Korea. TG and CX offered 5th freedom services nonstop between the two cities. After changing diplomatic relations and the beginning of additional nonstop flights, TG and CX never terminated the route.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!
