What Happened With DAL1047 (N659DL) Tonight?

I flew on NK flight 347 from LGA-MYR and, as we pushed back at approx 6:14pm, I noticed Delta flight 1047 (6pm departure to ATL) N659DL (SkyTeam livery 757-200) was in line for takeoff in front of Terminal B for about 10 minutes. There were numerous taxi delays due to a wind shift causing them to change runways. That caused us (the NK flight) to be #25 for takeoff (!), while the DL flight was #22 for takeoff. As we were inching closer to the runway, N659DL turned onto the runway and taxied off of it, returning to the gate. No I see that it finally left again at 9:01pm.

So my question is, why would it return to the gate especially after waiting 1.05 hours and becoming #2 for departure?

Probably burned through too much gas waiting and had to go get more fuel.

We do, but sometimes things don't work out.  

However, in looking at your timeline (I didn't see that they finally left at 2100)- it was much more likely to be a mechanical issue.
