Longest Segment On Which SQ Flies The A388?

Fri Dec 21, 2012 3:59 pm

Fellow a.nutters, I am planning a mileage burn trip as I've recently ended about 10 years straight of business travel and still have 260,000 miles in my US Airways account. I want to fly the SQ A388 in F, the record-holding longest flight (SQ21), and also hopefully fly a new airline or two in Star, but I have to end up with it as a return flight in order for it to only cost me 180,000 miles.

So far, the plan is this:
Leg 1: IAD-EWR on UA
Leg 2. EWR-SIN on SQ21
Leg 3: SIN-? on the longest A388 leg I can find (I would think it would be the SIN-LAX via NRT flight)
Leg 4: ?-IAD on a different Star airline (s)

In the Star Alliance, I've flown:
ANA
Air Canada
Austrian
Egyptair
Lufthansa
SAS
Singapore
Swiss
Turkish
United
US Airways

So out of the remaining 16 airlines, I could feasibly pick up 2-3 more on my return leg as several of them are APAC:
Air China
Asiana
Shenzhen
Air New Zealand
Thai

The main things I need help with is finding the longest flight on the A388 and opinions on which of the other APAC Star airlines have F class that's worth my VERY hard-earned miles. I'm trying to use the Star Alliance flight search, but it's all route-based, not aircraft.

Thanks in advance!

I think SIN-FRA is right up there. You could go SIN-FRA-IAD on the a388 and the 748i!

That would be awesome, except I think with my other legs (particularly SQ21) they would charge me differently because I continued the same direction rather than returning. Perhaps I could go SIN-FRA on the A388 and then return to somewhere else in Asia via another airline in order to get back to IAD?

EDIT: In checking Star's site, SQ operates the 773ER for both SQ326 and SQ26 SIN-FRA.

Yeah, it sucks, and it's all a technicality, but it can be manipulated thankfully.

I hope you CAN do it, but I've always read on various sites (e.g. ANA Star Alliance mileage award portal) that SQ restricts mileage awards in F and J on A380 and 77W aircraft - that's to say they don't offer mileage redemption seats in those cabins on those aircraft.

There was 1 exception to that earlier this year when suddenly SQ unexpectedly released a whole bunch of premium award space, but I can't remember if it was due to an IT issue or some tactical move in relation to its Star membership (FTalk.com)

SIN-LHR is SQ's longest A380 route. Any SIN-Europe A380 route is longer than NRT-LAX. If you're counting the 2 legs of SIN-NRT-LAX as a route then SIN-FRA-JFK is even longer, but you wouldn't be able to fly a new carriers

I'm booked on SQ 26 FRA-JFK for August 2013, and it sure shows an A388.

It's a seasonal dowguage, I wasn't sure if they would shift the a380 to flt326 or not but now I see they aren't.

brokenrecord, not to crush "your dreams" but redeeming US Airways miles on SQ in F will not be possible (applies to Swiss and Lufthansa as well). If you want to fly F using US Airways miles you will be limited to Thai, Asiana, Air China, United, and ANA (very difficult) among the majors..

Interesting. I guess I just need to call.

Unless something's changed since 2010, I'd have to respectfully disagree. I used US miles to fly LH in F on DXB-FRA, stopover to visit friends, then FRA-ORD, stopover, ORD-MUC-DXB in August 2010.

The mileage redemption guide also shows no restrictions other than a few of the non-Star carrier partners such as QR, VS, and RJ.

For sure THAI's brand new A380 in F from FRA to BKK connecting to HKG with ETHIOPIAN's B767 and from HKG (via PEK/visa friendly!) with AirChina's new F Class to LAX or JFK or SFO? Have a look:

Now that would be a great use of miles! That would also get me some new airports along with new airlines.

The new Air China F seats look quite nice, but I can't seem to find images of the Thai Royal First on their A388. Is it suite-style like SQ and EK? I also hadn't thought about throwing Ethiopian in there. Is the leg from BKK-HKG bookable on its own? I assume it's part of BKK-ADD.

Indeed things have changed. Things slowly started to change about a year ago. By mid 2012 F redemptions on LH and LX were being blocked (there's nothing in writing).
Regarding SQ, only SQ's own Krisflyer members are able to redeem F awards (again, there's nothing in writing).
This leaves Thai, Asiana, Air China, United, and ANA (still hard to get though) for F redemptions...

I doubt you will get any mileage redemption on a Singapore Airlines A380 Suite. To my knowledge not even PPS Solitaires are able to do this unless they redeem 1 Million Miles or higher depending which route you want to fly.
I would advise you pay the cost of the ticket if you want to fly in a Singapore Airlines A380 Suite.

Leg 2. EWR-SIN on SQ21

There too I doubt you will get a mileage redemption seat on that flight. It's an all-Business Class flight and it has regained in popularity since the end of flights was announced by Singapore Airlines.

There was a better way to fly it was called Concorde

But beware, it is only on selected flights- so you have to double check!

That really sucks. I've flown United International First, and that would be a mileage waste in my book.

Thanks for the advice, however, this is a thread about spending my miles not €10.000 or more. If I cannot spend my miles, I'll take it off the list.

Is there a way to check which frames have been fitted? I would think that one of the US legs would have it.
