I Applied For Global Entry :)

Thu Jan 03, 2013 7:46 pm

My significant other and I applied for Global Entry on Monday and we are very excited about getting this done with.

Question: Does anyone know how long it takes to have your application conditionally approved?

Once conditionally approved and an appointment is made, what kind of questions are asked during the interview?

Finally, once the interview is complete, how long does it to be accepted into the Global Entry Program and receive your card?

Any other thoughts on the matter are greatly appreciated!

I want to say we got our message in like 2-3 days, very very efficient.

Questions you should know the answer to without any problem, no need to study!!!

They will require your passport at the interview so when you are finished they can put the Global Entry info on your passport and it should then be active, or you may have to get online to finish, sorry I don't remember. As for the card you'll get in a few weeks, but you don't need that to use the Global Entry kiosks just your passport. The card can be used for NEXUS/Sentri programs at border crossings for Canada and Mexico along with your passport.

Smart move, even if you only fly domestic and are a high level in a FF program it will help with the Pre-Check. Best federal government program in years IMHO.

Especially if you are a UAL 1K (maybe 1P) and I think Amex Platinum (generic card) you get your GE fee reimbursed.

Probably one of the best things out there right now.

We sure did and even a bit more because of the delay it took UA to process the Global Entry fee.

Ahh, now you can start timing how long it takes you to get through the Customs Hall--the whole process from entry to exit. Should take from 2 to 3 minutes depending on how fast you walk!!

However, it does NOT speed up baggage claim. But it does get you through Customs faster at most airports!

You will enjoy it!!!

IIRC the longest time we've spent was the first time using the kiosk to make sure we did it all correct and to make sure my wife stood on her toes so the camera would get all of her face!!   That may have been 2 minutes total.

Easy solution, don't check luggage. Last trip we took was 10 days in Europe all in our roll-a-board and one backpack for the laptop.

I have found that one of the best perks of the Global Entry membership is access to the TSA PreCheck line. I didn't qualify through any one FF program. It make security as appropriately equipped airports slick. No need to take off your shoes, jacket, belt, or remove liquids, gels or your computer from your carry-on. Earlier in the week I was through LAX security in less than 5 minutes while the main security line was a total disaster.

The interview is no big deal. The people at my airport (PHX) were super friendly and helpful. They take your picture have you watch a video (if you so choose) and you are good to go. If recall correctly I got my number right at that time and could put it on my reservations even before I got my card in the mail.

Enjoy! It is absolutely worth it.

Global entry can make things easier overseas as well.

Currently, Australia has a smartgate system for immigration that allows Aus and NZ citizens to quickly get through immigration. At the moment they are trialling it for Global Entry participants, and soon you too will be able to quickly pass immigration in Australia.

Two minutes at IAH might be about right, depending on how fast one walks. If it takes me more than 3 minutes, it's usually because I screwed it up!

Does anyone know if/when Germans will be able to apply? I keep reading "talks are making good progress" and such, but never anything tangible. I absolutely adore the equivalent machines at FRA and GE should be just perfect for US immigration.

They technically have a spot February 21st and then a few a the very end of February, but I'm trying to coordinate and go with my girlfriend (we live together) since it's a 45 min drive to DFW. Hopefully she will be approved on Monday and then I can get her scheduled in a slot right next to mine.

I was going to try and walk-in Feb 22nd, but that would be selfish on my part and being the loving and non-selfish significant other I am, I will wait until she can go with me

A wish move similar to my first time getting to the Pre-Check and the Mrs. not getting it, had I gone through Pre-Check alone leaving her in line for screening my axx would have been ground up for the entire trip! A wise move Sir.

It took me about a week to 10 days to get conditional approval and then I set up the interview.. Here in Dallas, it takes about 6 weeks go get in... Other locations may not be as long and/or you can try to do an unscheduled Walk-in most people say they have been successful in doing that.

Once interview is done, it has been reported that it is effective almost immediately. If I were you, I'd get a move on it though.

Ahhhhhh - stop talking about this in public!
Too many people are getting qualified for Global Entry Already!
It actually took me a full two minutes to get through customs last week, because I was the 4th one to get in the NEXUS line, and there were only 3 machines! I had to wait 30 seconds for the first guy to finish. The delay was driving me crazy, crazy I tell you.

(Actualy, I made a comment, and the 3 people in front of me actually using the terminals laughed, told me to suck it up, and then commented that yes, it did seem like it was busier than usual).

PS - there must have been 500 or more people in the cattle chutes for immigration...so even the extra 30 seconds was probably looked on with envy (if not downright hatred). I waved and smiled.

Quoting IAHFLYR (Reply 1):
As for the card you'll get in a few weeks, but you don't need that to use the Global Entry kiosks just your passport

Not sure what the GOES card rules are, but for NEXUS we were told that while we don't actually show the card at airports (either the iris scanners or passport + fingerprint reader machined do the id), they still expect you to have the membership card in your possesion - if you get checked and don't have it, they told us it is considered a breach and the membership is at risk.
For ground border crossings, the card is needed for the RFID to identify you as you approach the booth, so no worries about trying to get through without it.

I changed my Location yesterday to Houston (IAH) Terminal E inside the terminal. I was able to get in much sooner. I'm now going down on February 16th (which is a Saturday and the soonest we could go) with the lady. I'm surprising her with a Lunch down at the Houston airport and in reality we are going to knock out the global entry while we are there..

Fly in, spend 3 hours at IAH (lunch and global entry) and fly back to DFW.

Should be a fun Saturday

Why the rush? And need to spend money to get it?

Yes I have GE, however would not imagine spending money, or jumping through such hoops simply to get an appointment.

Yes, Pappadeaux's

Also, I had some credit with United, so I figured it was a good opportunity to be random with the girlfriend and take her down to Houston for lunch. Global Entry had openings so it all works out.

Not many people get to fly down somewhere for lunch and do something so random and fun (well at least in my book). I love flying so it's a win win for all involved.

Do remember though you have to exit security and go to the int'l arrivals hall under Terminal E for the appointment.

The train down in the tunnels still runs between all terminals, but now the post security elevated tram runs to all as well. Much better spotting!
Have fun!

well, maybe there is a way in after security? It is worth a try. When I went through and exited terminal E, the signs and door were by the Starbucks in the int'l arrivals hall. Maybe give them a call?

I have never been asked for my card at either IAH or EWR to return to the USA, in fact during the interview we were told to put it in a safe place. All that you need is your passport, period. I just returned from Bolivia on Monday, though the entire immigration/customs in 90 seconds and out of the terminal at IAH from getting off the flight in five minutes.

Don't worry, you simply need to get on the above ground train from any terminal and get off at Terminal E, down the escalator and turn left, exit the secure area to the right just before the security checkpoint for Terminal E and take the elevator by the doors down one level to the arrival floor. Exit the elevator to the right and go toward the food area and Starbucks, you 'll see the CBP sign on the wall opposite the elevators which will be on your left as you walk toward Starbucks. It's so simple.

You should have your return boarding passes so when you're interview is finished go back to the elevator and up one level, go through security in Terminal E and head off toward E15-E24 gate area for your lunch at a Pappadeaux's , you will have plenty of time for lunch, even if your flight back to DFW is out of Terminal B or C.....hope back on the above ground train and you're ready to hop on the flight. Yes, the above ground train is still inside the secure area.

I'm almost due to start the re-application process, so I will ask. It could be one of those details that have changed, perhaps with the inclusion of NEXUS into the bigger Global Entry program.
They used to be seperate and when I first got it, NEXUS was only valid into the US from Canada directly. Certainly nice to be able to use it now at all Global Entry ports (which I now do maybe 6 times per year in addition to the trips from Canada).

NEXUS was part of the Global Entry when I was approved so I don't think it has changed since last January. I hope you find out that you don't need to carry the card along because I don't want any more cards regardless of what type, the passport is simply enough.
